Jeramie
I know most people are using the .17hmr as a varmit rifle but is that its only purpose? What I mean is will it also serve for a Yote gun? I have heard about people shooting yotes with the .17 but how effective is it on that size of game? What ranges? Etc. I have the chance to pic up one pretty cheap but we dont have ground hogs around here. If it would only be a plinking gun I would probably pass. Is it to fast for a squirrel gun if you take head shots? Honestly I have no real experience with a .17hmr. so suggestions and general information would be greatly appreciated. jerdanmagic
Re: .17hmr I love my .17HMR, but I've yet to shoot a coyote with it. I know that people have had success shooting coyotes with a .17, but I just have'nt had the chance yet. I use mine for armadillos, turtles, etc. Its a really fun gun to shoot! BLH
Re: .17hmr the .17 is a great varmit and coyote gun. I've shot coyotes with it and it works great, I just don't shoot over 130 yards or so. As far a squirrel hunting, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.... CDubWSR
Re: .17hmr you can kill just about anythign with a 17. put that bullet right between the ear and eye and they shouldnt go far. i dunno about shooting coyotes behind the shoulder with it, the will probably run off and die eventually but i would stick to head shots on them. Guest cowpoke
Re: .17hmr Hate to be the ogre here, but I don't know if the 17hmr is the best choice for coyote. There have been wars fought on the predator masters forum over the 17 hmr and it's use on coyotes. Most of the folks there, including me, think that it would be better to use something with more wallop on a coyote than the 17 hmr. 221 fireball, 17 Remington centerfire, on up to say the 25-06. [/ QUOTE ] While it is true that it is not the best choice for coyotes, it is none the less a good choice for a combo plinker, small game, coyote gun. Sure you can make a valid argument that a centerfire will be a much beter choice, but with proper bullet placement the little cartridge will do the job just fine. I would keep the distances moderate for coyotes though. I would say 75-100 yards would be my max for using the cartridge on critters that size. On prarie dogs, ground squirrels, or other small vermin, you can extend that to 150 yards.
hutchies
Re: .17hmr I hit a yote at about 70 and shot a little high. Left a good hole in her. I did not open her up to check but I think I clipped the top of the lung. The .17 HMR works well for yotes in my opinion. Especially if you save the hides or sell the hides because it does little damage to them. I know guys that kill yotes with .22s.
