Sunday's Mountain Goat Adventure

Weather has not been conducive for hunting goats but I went out yesterday in the rain and fog anyways.

Did manage to find a few goats. Glassed them on this cliff face.

One was all by himself in the middle of sheer vertical cliff. I didn't think I could get at him without killing myself.

Through the fog, I was able to glass him decend the cliff towards a band of timber. I decided if I could get across a raging creek I would try for him. I had the Waders with me but the current was very strong and the water was quite deep. I managed to locate a log to cross on and the hunt was on.

I worked my way up a finger of timber with rock walls surrounding me. Figured I would get cliffed out. Managed to keep the climb relatively sane. Didn't want to slip and fall as I was doing it solo and I was a long ways from help. Worked my way up one Rock outcrop, pulled myself up and was staring face to face with a goat at about 10 yards. Only saw a quick glimpse of it as it bailed into the fog.

Because I was stalking blind in the fog, I was hoping that wasn't the goat that I was stalking, so I continued to climb. As I got close to where I had last seen the goat through the spotter, there he was, staring at me at about 150 yards. Because I was still in the trees, I couldn't find much of a shooting lane. I managed to find a higher spot to rest on but I was sliding in the dirt to much. I took off my backpack and put it on the rock and was able to get as steady as expected on such a steep hillside by bracing myself between 2 rocks. The billy was standing straight on and the angle was very extreme, so I held low, right at the hairline at the bottom of the brisket. The first shot was high, hitting the rock above him. He spun around on his ledge, went out of sight, then he peeked over again at me. This time I aimed for his knees. Again I missed, just shooting above him. He took off and I let another hail mary go as I got glimpse of hair through the trees, but there was no hope in ****.

The cliff he was on.

His bedding zone under this overhang.

There was years and years worth of goat scat under that overhang.

Here I am, soaked to the core on my way back down the mountain.

I've got one more weekend left in the season so I will be making one more kick at the ol' can.

Them goats do like the ROUGH country. Good Luck----CB. I hope when you shoot him----he won't fall off that cliff. Mine did----broke both horns off & really messed up his face on the fall.

Re: Sunday\'s Mountain Goat Adventure

Cam,

Yea, I've been rather busy the last little while. Between the new job, moose, muleys, and mountain goats, I haven't really had much time to post. I got your email with the pics showing you guy's success. Some nice looking buckies for sure. Seen an absolute GIANT muley last weekend. Only saw a glimpse of him when I bumped him in some thick nasty stuff. What I saw of him made my heart skip a beat! Only really got a good look of his backs on his one side. DEEP FORKS, GOBS of MASS and a WHACK OF JUNK! Definately will be hunting that BAD BOY hard over this next month!

Was back in my goat area today. Sun was shining and glassing was great. Didn't see jack all for goats. Wondering if maybe all the action on Sunday was a little too much for them. Will be back up there in the next couple of days. Hopefully they'll return to their normal patterns before the weekend.

Here's some more pics from last week.

Thinking this goat is a billy. I call him "One Horn" as he's broke on one side.

One of the Many Bull Moose that I've seen over the last month. Don't have an LEH Any Bull tag so I'm stuck hunting the elusive Spike/Fork general season.

Here's one of those elusive Spike/Forks. This turkey was in the only meadow for miles and miles that had a Private No Hunting Sign on it. Found out later that it is posted incorrect and this is not Private. The bull was killed by another hunter the next day on a different meadow anyways.

A moose grizzly kill I found last week.

For those that don't know, I live in British Columbia, Canada and I'm hunting public land.

Re: Sunday\'s Mountain Goat Adventure

Great photos & stories as usual. I'd be showing that moose kill nothing but elbows. The grizzly that made the kill couldn't have been too far away. Good luck getting the big muley buck.

Re: Sunday\'s Mountain Goat Adventure

You typically want to anchor the goat on the ledge he's on or else he'll end up falling a long ways. But goats on known for doing that one last kick that sends them free falling. Many hunters wind up walking up on broken horns and very tenderized meat.
