paul23
Have a quick question for you guys. Is there a 270, 270 WSM, and a 270 WSSM??? I have a 270 and am thinking about a new rifle in this caliber. What are the benefits over each other?
AJ
Re: confusion Here are the most popular .27 caliber factory cartridges: 6.8 Rem .270 Winchester 270 Winchester Short Magnum (WSM) 270 Weatherby Magnum The benefit of each, the bigger the cartridge, the faster the bullet goes. But it also increases muzzle blast and recoil. The ammo price also goes up significantly. There are some wildcats that people have formed like the .308 necked down to .270. The 270 WSSM you mentioned is not a factory loaded round. It was formed by necking a .25 WSSM up to accept .277" bullets. That would make a very nice deer round that should be about equal to the .270 Winchester. Being a wildcat you can not just go to your local gun shop and buy ammo. You have to handload it. Occasionally it takes special dies to form the brass to your chamber. For the most part, the .270 Winchester will work just fine for deer, antelope, bear, caribou, and elk. Pick the proper bullet and it will work fine as long as you put the bullet where it needs to go.
