never seen this before now

About 7 Sunday morning a single young buck steps of the woods out about 150 yards out. He looks around, takes a few steps, then looks back. Looked like he was heading to cut through the brush pile so I grunted one short soft grunt. He looked up, looked back again and another buck steps out. The second buck was a bit heavier and he looked at the first buck. They both started up the hill between the woods and the brush pile and got to about 115 yards out from me, they were downwind from me and the wind was pretty consistent. The first one stopped, the second one angled towards him and nudged him with his antlers. They turned facing and started pushing each other, then it picked up a little. I could barely hear the antlers, but I could hear them. They jabbed each other in the sides a few times, and the pushing picked up intensity a little more. Kept hearing something up in the woods behind me. Decided while watching these two guys to see how they would respond to some calling so I let out a bleet from the can, they stopped and both looked up, angled towards me one behind the other. They stopped and faced each other again, so I let out a couple short grunts, then they started towards me again, then two young does step out of the woods between me and the two bucks, but due to the lay of the land with the ridge of the hill I am not sure if the bucks could see the does. The does are in range, but neither is offering a shot. I determined that they were both yearlings, and I decided I would just watch them. The bucks got as close as about 40 yards out from the does and then went off to our grower food plot about 150 yards away back off to my right, then about 15 minutes later while the does were feeding out in front of me the two bucks came back. One chased one doe, the other one chased the other but only for a couple seconds and only long enough to chase them off the plot in front of me. Had some really good shot opportunities on both bucks before they finally made their way off around 8, but they were both young, the older of the two possibly being a really young 2 1/2 year old.

With the youth hunt coming up this weekend figure my daughter should have a really good opportunity at taking a deer.

Have seen fights on television, and even seen two bucks tied up while driving down the road, but had never seen two bucks tie up while out hunting before now. Pretty cool to watch, and experience.

that's cool, personally, i think you can call a hunt successful when you have an experience like that, it's definately somthing you'll remember for a long time. it's things like that which keep a lot of us going back out

Is that as opposed to a really old two and a half year old? grin.gif

Re: never seen this before now

I feel comfortable answering that buck to doe ratio question, bc west tennessee is where I cut my teeth hunting and I still go there at least once every year. NO! when I was in 10th grade I logged every deer i saw for a science project, and came up with a buck to doe ratio of about 16 does for every buck. This was probably a little high, bc some of the does I saw were the same ones every time, but so were some of the bucks. i would say 8-12 to one would be perfectly reasonable for the area I was in in W TN. but as the rut heats up if you put bucks and does together they are going to act like bucks and does!

Is there a good buck/doe ratio in your area?

Not really. They have created some doe hunts with rifles in the area to help balance out the numbers in the past couple years. I would estimate the current buck to doe ratio here in this area to be between 5-8 does per buck.
