Guest Danbo
Can anyone give me some clues as to why I don't see bucks on my property? I have 52 acres of land in NY just outside of a small town. There are plenty of apples, pears, berries and lots of low underbrush and 20 acres of overgrown fields. There is not much hunting pressure in the area and lots of woods, corn and hay fields nearby. I can see 6 to 10 does each morning/evening feading on the apples this time of year. BUT, No bucks! Trail cam showed 1 small spike from June to Oct.. I've moved the cameras around but still nothing. After 10 years of living here, I have only seen 2 bucks. What's going on? Swamphunter
Re: where are the bucks? Danbo...whereabouts in NY?? Several of us in here live in NY and may have better information for you. I can tell you that where I live, the rutting action has not started quite yet and the bucks are not chasing does yet. I would hunt somewhere between the feeding area and the bedding area in the morning and catch them heading for some thick stuff where they can sleep and feel secure. In the evening I would hunt staging areas just prior to the food they are consuming. Prior to the rut, bucks will usually not expose themselves in fields or near food plots before darkness falls. They will stay in a thickly wooded area maybe 75-100 yards prior to the gourmet. They spots are identified but a lot of rubs on trees all confined to a small area. I think they polish their antlers while waiting for darkness! Good luck..
RangerClay
Re: where are the bucks? Danbo, Welcome to the best forum!! Swampy is right, we have a great bunch of NY'ers that hang out here. Tell us what town you live near and maybe we could help you more. Are you new to deer hunting? A little info will help me to answer your question Love your avitar Ranger
NYBUCK
Re: where are the bucks? Yeah Danbo, give us some more info. The area I hunt has been pretty dead the last couple years, but this year I have seen a ton of does and lots of small bucks. It seems like the days of old. Pretty excited about this year and my chances.
Guest Danbo
Re: where are the bucks? I live near Vernon, NY (near Oneida). I have been hunting for 20 years and just started to get back into it now that the kids are old enough to pee out of a tree! I thought I'd join the forum and see what else I can learn. I am just perplexed at the fact that there is lots of sign and does but just have not seem the boys. There must be bucks in the area as I've had fawns (even triplets) each year in the field. Vegitation and cover is great. Just plain stumped. Only 1 rub to note. Do you think a small food plot might be in order in case the big guys are living on the neighbors properties? Maybe they the propertly is not big enough? With the CWD in the area now, I think the hunting pressure will be diminishing as the fear grips the locals as well. I resemble that remark!! 24 years of bangin' & hangin'! Danbo, I grew up just south of you in Hamilton and that is where I do my southern tier hunting. You have some great hunting in your area. Food plots may be the direction you want to go but I bet you will see more deer come rut time. If there are does around there will be bucks showing up to breed them. You can count on it!!! popgun
Re: where are the bucks? Welcome to the forums Danbo.. My sources tell me that the bucks are hanging out along the creek. Follow State Hwy.12B to the intersection of Van Hyning Rd. Follow Van Hyning about 1/4 to 1/2 mile and park before you cross the bridge. Walk north along the creek . The creek will bend slightly to the left and then to the right again. After the right bend walk about 200 yds. and look for the spot where the deer have been crossing the creek. Sit and wait...They will be along about 30 minutes before sundown. (note): my sources have failed before and are therefore not guaranteed. ....popgun

wtnhunt
Re: where are the bucks? Welcome to the forums. If you are seeing does there will be bucks around. Maybe the ratio where you hunt is low, but would still expect with that many does to see some bucks during the pre rut and rut.
Guest Danbo
Re: where are the bucks? Pulled my trail cam yesterday and have a 3pt'r roaming in the dark. 1 photo only. I'm going to photo the entire area this rutting season, so we'll see what happens. Thanks for all the helpful comments! Happy to be part of the forum.
