Re: baiting ?

BAITING IS ILLEGAL IN ILLINOIS, AND IT IS FINE WITH ME.THEY HAVE OUTLAWED ANY FEEDING OF WILD DEER HERE TOO,BECAUSE OF CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE.I USED TO PUT OUT CORN AND BUCK GRUB,OR FEED AFTER THE SEASON THRU SPRING FOR DEER THAT WERE WORN OUT FROM THE RUT,AND FOR PREGNANT DOES AND THE FAWNS,BUT I'M NOT ALLOWED TO DO IT ANYMORE.

Re: baiting ?

Baiting is legal in Wis.

They're not many groups who make drives like when I was a kid. I like it as I get a better look at deer than when I was younger shooting at them on drives.

Generally, everyone near us has some type of corn pile.

Here's a couple bucks my old partner shot over a bait. (the big ones do come in)

Re: baiting ?

We have several corn feeders on the farm I hunt.

We were originally hoping it would keep some of the deer in our area. It has not worked. The deer still wander from place to place and generally feed at night. The big bucks seem to avoid feeders even though the doe hang out there in the evenings.

The only thing we have seemed to gain by putting out corn is squirrels the size of raccoons, and raccoons the size of bears. I can't help but wonder what size deer we would have if they would only eat the corn.

Feeding deer is a little expensive also, especially since the squirrels and coons get most of it.

It is legal here to bait or feed the deer until Jan 15. After that it is illegal.

I don't think there are any real advantages to feeding or baiting, because I think it helps make the deer more nocturnal. .....popgun

Re: baiting ?

It's legal here on private land and where my lease is about everyone down there does. I've never had any luck at it the few times I put corn out. Too far away to keep it fresh and I seem to have better luck in the hardwoods than most of the guys I know that do hunt over bait. grin.gif

Re: baiting ?

It's legal up here in Saskatchewan-Canada, but the reason a lot of bowhunters and hunters in general do it is to draw the deer through an area that is in thicker timbered land with less available forage. It not only works during early season in Sept. but really well during the rut in Nov..

Re: baiting ?

1. Legal for deer but not for bear. But I prefer to call it feeding not baiting since I do not hunt over it.

2. I feel it can help the deer out if you give them what they need at certain times of the year. IE: a protien pellet or equivalent during spring and summer for antler growth or higher fawn birth weight rates, then switch to fatty stuff or "carbs" for late fall and winter to help them build fat reserves.

In other words, if you put out food, do it for the deers benifit/health, not to just draw them in. JMO

3. I do not have to do this to draw deer off neighboring property. I have over 40 acres of clover/alfalfa/rye grass and its the only fields around that does. I believe that draws the deer off the other properties... LOL

(planted by a local farmer for his winter cow feed)

I suppliment with a spin cast feeder for the reasons listed above.

For the record, I am not against baiting or feeding. As long as it is legal where you hunt.

Re: baiting ?

It's legal here and we usually keep one active-I hardly ever hunt over it because I don't have the patience but it's good if we have a relative or friend wants to come out for a day or so-I don't like stillhunting with anybody but Ty. The big bucks really will hit a bait after the rut especially if iot gets -30.

Re: baiting ?

Like superguide, I keep one active but I guess it is not really a bait site, more of a feed site, it's only 200 yards from my house. I feed them to try and keep them as healthy as possible and the rare time I go sit back there to hunt, i carry my bow. Superguide.............do you know anybody who may seel me some peas or oats this winter, I'm running out of grain and can only bring so much back from dad's farm next weekend in the car.

Re: baiting ?

Saskman just about any farmer would have some peas-Boyko's aren't too far out from town-just at tracks on way tomill they would have some. You know that place I thought your bud had permission to hunt-they found a 150 tangled up dead in some bales this week-like I said if he hunts on foot he already has permission for great spot-poor guy got lucky and shot that hog out there first time he hunted lol.

Re: baiting ?

I know that overbaiting isn't good to do. The D.N.R. only allows us to use a five gallon pail. This is a sound practice in avoiding the deers dependence on us to keep them fed on purely grain or other feed.

This enough to help those who choose to bait happy and not impact the deer in bad way.
