popgun
Where Are the Deer? I hear this question quite often, and have learned that sometimes the prospective hunter is asking the wrong people. If you go to the local hunter breakfast hangout, and ask the other hunters that question, you could very well get answers that could lead you into the Sahara Desert; and I don’t think there are many deer there. There aren’t too many avid deer hunters that want to disclose the location of their favorite hunting areas to a stranger. (Or even a friend in some cases.) It seems that nowadays many of the owners of the property are not even aware of the variety of critters that dwell within their boundaries, especially if they aren’t hunters themselves. Many of these property owners will give limited permission to hunt if the hunter will only ask. Where are the deer on public land? Who do I ask? You can sometimes ask the manager of the public land area, or a Wildlife Officer in that jurisdiction, and be satisfied with their information; but if you do, you may be bypassing some of the greatest sources of information. I have found that if I am interested in the deer traffic in a particular area, I have been very successful in getting helpful information from those who travel the area on a regular basis. Check with the UPS Driver, the Mail Carrier, and Newspaper Delivery people. People you know that go to work early, or return home late in the evenings are also good prospects. I found one good location by asking my own State Farm Agent. He told me where most of the car/deer collisions occurred within only a few miles of my house. As it turned out, it was near a bridge crossing a bayou, where the deer traveled on a frequent basis. There was even a sign saying, “Deer Crossing”, on the freeway. You would be surprised how little some of these areas are hunted, and how easily some of this information can be obtained from people who have nothing to loose. They are not hunters; so they are willing to share information that many hunters keep “Top Secret”. So….If anyone wants to know where the deer are in your area….Just ask some of the most unlikely sources, and you may be able to find them……And always remember, there is no such thing as land that doesn’t belong to somebody. Ask for permission first. Have a great season.. ….popgun

Master_Chief
Re: Where Are the Deer? Great post. I have found another wealth of information. School bus drivers. They are on every road, every morning, every afternoon. My cousin drives bus in Pa and she hunts as well. Took us a while to figure out why she hunted some off the wall places. She has a brid's eye view from that bus when driving. She has even called back to the house and left messages of where she is seeing bucks chasing does.
