bowhunt101
Fellas Ive always believed in taking out cowhorns/spike bucks cus I believe them to be inferior deer with bad genes (I may get ragged for that but thats how Ive been raised so thats what Im going by).... Well we where coming home through the hunting club this afternoon and met a buddy of ours on the way, well he was riding around looking and happened to have his rifle with him.... We stopped and looked for a minute when a buck stood up in the bean field.... It was just sitting there looking for the sound of the diesel truck running so my buddy got out with his gun and eased down the ditch to get in range of him (but also far enough from the truck to call it a stalk), and before we knew what was going on he pulled the trigger and turned the buck a backflip and I mean fer real a back flip.... After that we thought it was dead and we had already established it as a cowhorn so it was one we wanted taken out.... Anyways we started to him and he was stone cold dead so we helped him load him up in the truck and there was meat for the freezer, perty tall cowhorn to with a little tiny browtine.... We headed on home after that and I hunted behind the house for a while but didnt see anything but squirells.... Im ready for Friday to get here though cus there are some big bucks over where I intend to hunt, they have done spotted a 10, 8, and a big 7 over there and Im hoping to lay the crosshairs onem.... You fellas takemeasy and have a good hunting season....-tim

wtnhunt
Re: Witnessed a Management Buck Shot tonight........ Yep, the cowhorns and spikes we see around here are generally late born one and one half year olds.
Guest tyshe17
Re: Witnessed a Management Buck Shot tonight...... I agree with wtnhunter. I have seen a spike turn into a 16 in wide six in one year.

[/ QUOTE ] You really have been taught WRONG about shooting spikes for the reason you give. That whole cowhorn/spike thing being inferior genetic bucks is something that came over from the old country and applied to roe deer I think. It's just crazy thinking today, in this day and age. Everyone who hunts should know that most young bucks start out as spikers. Just because you were taught that way, doesn't make it so. AdvantageTimberLou
Re: Witnessed a Management Buck Shot tonight........ I can't see them going from button bucks to 4 points in a year or so. Not in my location here in Michigan. Spikes become next years 4 point or bigger, and from there we see bigger bucks. If we shot our spikes we'd see no bucks with tines the next year! JMHO!
rockefeller66
Re: Witnessed a Management Buck Shot tonight........ nice, i can't say i shoot anything under 4.5 years old but that is just me, we hunters are all entitled to our own beliefs and as long as ya do it legal, more power to ya, great hunt! AdvantageTimberLou
Re: Witnessed a Management Buck Shot tonight........ Not a problem here either I am just saying that if we shot all our spikes here we wouldn't see any 4 pointers and so on. Our spikes become next years 4 or 6 pointer, and if they make it beyond that year then they become 8 or 10 points. We have good nutrition too, as we have many crop fields that the deer eat from, its just our buck to doe ratio isn't like some states. Then we have areas of QDM but that's a whole new can or worms!!
