Lead Shot for Geese?

I was wondering...If you hunt geese over land why are you not allowed to use lead shot?

It's more leathal than steel. Cheaper than steel.

Obvisously I know it leads to lead poisoning.

But the why I see it, it is no more different that hunting quil or pheasant in the same field using lead shot which is legal.

I was just curious and figured I was overlooking something, but can someone inform me to what I am missing?

Re: Lead Shot for Geese?

The main reason is that the lead shot can get caught in the feathers of some of the bird and be deposited in the water when the birds land in the water. I do find it strange that you can use lead shot for pheasant but have to use steel on geese even if it's in the same field. The main problem with lead shot is that the birds ingest it while eating the vegetation and get lead posioning.

Re: Lead Shot for Geese?

It's a federal law. Migratory waterfowl may only be hunted with non-toxic shot.

It's universal from field to water because, simply, it's easier to enforce than a patchwork type of law that allows it in some places and not others.

The ban on lead is well over a decade old. Why are we still having this discussion????
