iron buck
I am getting ready for our winter caribou hunt. It is November 20th through 23rd. From what I gather we will have COLD conditions LOL. I will be using my Remington 700 7mm Rem mag w/ 4-12x Leupold. I will be taking my Winchester M70 Stainless & Wood 30-06 w/ 2.5 -8 x Leupold as a back up & loner to CB if he can't get close enough to use his 444 MArlin LOL I was told that degreasing the actions would be a good idea. Things brings me to my questions. 1. What do I degrease the actions with. 2. Are lever actions done differently? 3. Where do I buy "graphite" to use as a substitute lubricant? Or something else? 4. Does stainless steel have to be treated differently due to spalling potential? Any info would be helpul. Thanks!
Reloader
Re: Degrease Action for cold (winter caribou) Try AJ's new gun cleaning instructions ...it covers degreasing and relubing action and triger assemblies for cold weather as part of his new gun inspection. AJ
Re: Degrease Action for cold (winter caribou) Hey IB, You can use something like Gun Scrubber or some other aerosol. I would not use a typical gun oil, but I would use something like Remington's Dry Lube sparingly in the bolt. I would use something on the locking lugs to prevent galling. One product that I have been impressed with is Slip 2000. It has a pour spec down to -60 degF. That's friggin cold. I use it in my guns with great results. Granted the worst VA/PA winter is no where near what Northern Quebec can dish out in late November. I would use that stuff over graphite/molybdenum disulfide as moly is nasty messy. I use it on bullets, and have used it on some mechanical itsms for lube, but it gets the black powder mess everywhere. It's available from a variety of places. I get it from McMaster Carr. If I were you, I would degrease the gun and use Slip 2000 sparingly. When I got up there, I would give the gun a good functional check out to see if it will function in that balmy -10 degF weather. Pop off a couple rounds to see if the scope is still on, etc. If it is getting sluggish and cold, I would degrease the gun and go dry on the hunt. Its not like you are going to get into a fire fight and a few shots/days with a dry gun is not a problem.
007hunter
Re: Degrease Action for cold (winter caribou) Exscuse my ignorance, but why do you have to degrease your gun?
AJ
Re: Degrease Action for cold (winter caribou) Some of the oil can become frozen in the extreme cold temperatures. Firing pins and trigger mechanisims can freeze rendering a gun un usable or possibly unsafe as it could go off when it warms up.
007hunter
Re: Degrease Action for cold (winter caribou) I never heard of that. I don't have to worry about that here in PA, right? Extreme temperatures would be in the negatives, I would assume.
