Re: Woman Sees Husband Off to Iraq, Gets Fired

That's too bad....but I think she should have called in when she returned on the 16 th and told them she would be back to work on the 18 th.

They were expecting her to return on the 17 th and she didn't show.

She will soon find a higher paying job, that she doesn't deserve, just because a lot of people feel sorry for her.

She had already been off for a week, and maybe it was someone else's chance to begin their vacation to deer hunt, in Alaska, that had been planned and paid for, far in advance.

Remember there were other factors involved that the manager didn't divulge to the press.

popgun, I do beleive that she told her employer that she may or may not be in on the 17th, but definately on the 18th, so technically she did inform them that she would not be in, IMO. And how do you know she will find a higher paying job she doesn't deserve, have you met this woman?

Re: Woman Sees Husband Off to Iraq, Gets Fired

I would bet money that there is a lot more to this story than we know. Maybe she has a history of being late or not showing up for work, or maybe attitude problems at work. She describes herself as a model employee who always showed up for work, well, thats what she is gonna say to the press, do you think she is gonna say, "Well, I told my boss that I was leaving and if he didn't give me the time off I was going anyway, then, I told him I'll be back to work on the 17th, but, because I needed another day off I took it regardless of what they had planned." She's not gonna bring up the negative stuff, but, from what it sounds like, this company probably isn't very big, she worked at the front desk, on Mon, Tue, Wed. It sounds to me like she said she would try to be back on the 17th, she was back, and available to work on the 17th but because she was "emotionally drained" she decided not to work on the 18th, nothing was ever said if she called the day before and said she wouldn't be there. By all accounts, since she didn't call the 17th and say she couldn't make it on the 18th, they expected her to be there. By what she said, she makes it sound like they knew she wasn't going to be there on the 18th, she said, they said.

And naturally you assume the worst. I think the manager only said that because he's embarassed now because of all the publicity it is getting.

Legally the manager cannot disclose any information without written permission from the employee. Now days when calling to check references you can't ask why they were fired or any specifics. All they can tell you is if the person was dismissed or eligible for rehire.

[/ QUOTE ]

That tells the whole story to me. They were looking for another reason to can her and she provided it.

People get fired everyday, and she is no different. If she had been an exceptional employee, without any problems, I feel sure she would not have been fired. Good employees are just to hard to come by. Plus they had already given her a week off and she was supposed to return to work on Monday. No show, no call, bye bye.

The only reason this is being discussed is because her husband is in the service. I have the utmost respect for him and all others that defend this country, but those of us that don't still have a job to do, and the companies we work for depend on us to do those jobs. If they can't depend on an employee, they no longer need that employee.

I imagine, like I believe Popgun said, through the media coverage she gets over this, not only will she find a better job, but Oprah will probably put her on TV to tell how bad of an injustice has been done to her.

Re: Woman Sees Husband Off to Iraq, Gets Fired

So if a company just decides to shut their doors and not tell the employees until they come to work the next morning and find a sign on the gate then that would be ok too because the employer is the one that need them. I depend on the company I work for the same way they depend on me. If they have problems I work more or solve them, If I have problems they work with me to solve them. Alot of companies don't understand that concept anymore and as soon as they get mad at an employee they fire them.

Re: Woman Sees Husband Off to Iraq, Gets Fired

I agree with it should work both ways, and I think that comes back to be a good employee. I know we take care of our good employees, because they take care of us.

If you work at a lousy company, as soon as you can find a better job, you will take it and leave the lousy company for greener pastures.

It goes both ways. Lousy employee, get rid of them. Lousy company, find a new one. That is what I am trying to say. I don't think that the fact that she was 1 day late returning to work is the reason she was canned. It might have been the last reason, but I feel sure there were others leading up to it.

I'm with popgun, slugshooter (Oh my God, heck must have frozen over) wink.gif, and texastrophies on this. There is more to this story than just what is in the article. I have my doubts that she was such a stellar employee and that she is as much a victim as they are making her out to be.

I actually agree with every bit of your statement! And yes, most likely she was on her last "inch of rope" with her employer. Speaking from that side of the fence.... she most likely "pushed the envelope" beyond the edge.

At least she can now file for un-employment!

Re: Woman Sees Husband Off to Iraq, Gets Fired

If the company can't depend on her, get rid of her. It does sound like this was just more ammo for getting her out the door.

Now she can sit home and sulk all she wants. I hate whiney weekend warrior families when the military person is actually called upon to do their job. It's ok with the extra money, training, benefits, until Uncle Sam asks them to do their job and the whining starts.

Two sides to every story. You should know by now the papers and media are going to spin it towards the direction that causes the most outcry wink.gif

You guys know that I am familiar with the media...the phrase I have heard them use is "If it bleeds, it reads"...not so much meaning actually blood, but just juicy. I AM NOT a fan of the media. blush.gifgrin.gif
