Whos rattling?

I posted this at AT b/c there were a bunch of guys talking about how they rattled in all these bucks already. But I haven't gotten one response yet. I guess my name isn't well known enough over there. Or they are blowing smoke.

I've had my rattle bag out twice and haven't had any response yet. For those of that have rattled this year and are having success, are you hittin it hard or just tickling it softly? Are you grunting aggressively along with the rattling? I have only rattled in a few deer in my day and am looking for some tips.

Re: Whos rattling?

It's a tough call, a lot depends on your area. But if I rattle I tend to do it softly, only because I know a lot of guys are probably out there hammering them. If I do it hard it won't be for another week or so, peak rut time, IMO it's still a little early to hit them hard.

Re: Whos rattling?

I havnt started & wont for @ least a week. But walking back to the truck last night I heard 2 bucks going @ each other.I snuck up to about 40 yards & watched them in the dark.It didnt last long but they are def thinking about it.I dont over work my areas with rattling.I only rattle when I know the big guys are in the rut & may get a response.End of the 1rst week in Nov I usually start.

Re: Whos rattling?

I have tickled the horns a couple of times with a grunt following but nothing yet. In the pre rut I like to use smaller horns to start, as they don't make a pile of racket when working them and bigger bucks won't be apprehensive to take a peek at who's scrapping. JMO Good luck!

I have tried to rattle for many years at different times without any luck, but I think one problem is our buck to doe ratio is out wack to many does and not enough bucks.

I haven't even gotten into the woods yet but it may be a little early to get those snot blowing reactions out of bucks. The experts always say you rattle in many more bucks than you ever see so that could also be an explanation... i.e., they could be hanging up before you see them. If you've rattled in bucks before, do you remember the circumstances... time of year, weather, rattling technique...

as far as 'tips', I'm no expert but I have rattled in some nice deer. Unfortunately I haven't been able to connect with all of them. I always try to incorporate grunting into a rattling sequence and I try to vary the way I 'bang the horns' together. Sometimes I'll use different grunt tubes to imitate the sound of two different bucks. I also always carry a 'can' call with me as well.

Re: Whos rattling?

I've been rattling since opening morning, I started with really really light rattling, I've slowly been intensifying it though. I don't go by what others say the deer are doing on a message board unless I see they are from near my area because this varies so much from place to place.

I've never had a deer respond to rattling, had them look, but never had them respond so I've basically been doing it on a trial-and-error basis this year since I've done it very little in the past.
