Guest bowhunter56
For those that shoot competition or even practive, during the off season, do you lower your draw weight, since you don't have to worry about speed or penetration? MCH
Re: draw weight and competition I wouldn't go as far as to say I don't worry about speed. A faster arrow has a flatter trajectory and will be beneficial when misjudging distances by a couple of yards. I'll give you an example: My first bow I ever owned was a Bear Black Panther. I had a 10 yard pin, a 20 yard pin and a 25 yard pin for hunting. If I used my 10 yard pin shooting at a 20 yard target, I would shoot 4 inches low. Now, I'm shooting a Fred Bear TRX and I don't have a 10 yard pin. In fact, I can use my 20 yard pin when shooting at a 10 yard target. What you do find, is that a lot of guys will drop their poundage AND go to a lighter arrow, for the reason you mentioned: No penetration worries. I shoot 65 pounds. Hunting and 3-D. Its the perfect poundage for me because I don't get tired after a competition or during one. Just remember, being able to draw a bow back several times without tiring is important....but you don't want to be "lobbing" arrows up there because in the end, it will hurt you in your yardage estimation. dg
Re: draw weight and competition I like to keep the poundage the same all year (60#). That way, whether it's hunting or 3D, I'm right near 280 fps.
VtBowhunter
Re: draw weight and competition Speed is far more important during 3D season, then it is during hunting season, however, I leave my bow set at 65# year round.
Tony
Re: draw weight and competition im also the same way ., i like to keep my bow set right around 62 to 64 lbs for hunting and 3D . the only reason i might lower it is to make the speed requirement for say an NFAA 3d shoot. which is 280fps. all of the other 3Ds i shoot its around 294 fps. your draw weight should be at a comfortable setting for you. not for the speed you want. i would rather have a slower arrow that is more comfortable than a fast arrow that i have to struggle to pull back. for indoor target i like to shoot right at 57 lbs and shoot 2613s . speed doesnt matter for indoor target. Shoot Strong Tony
