to get a hang on stand and leave it up where i hunt....i have a climber but its just to much work to use every time i go up, it good if i am hunting and decide to try a new spot, but using it in the same spot is a pain....i am afraid of heights so i have had no intrest in hang-ons in the past...and i am a big guy so that also scared me away (thinking it was gunna fall)....but lately i have been lookin and have found some that look pretty stable and i thinik i might give it a whirl. i have been lookin at a lone wolf hang on...has a 350 wt cap. the only thing i don't like is the ladders you can get for em...i don't like to climb straight up...so i was thinking of finding an old extention ladder and ratcheting the top to the tree at an angle.

Re: i think i\'m ready...

The lock on types are good if your hunting the same tree, like I do. I have several actually and no climbers.

Well I have a tree lounge but use it like a lock on too.

I use screw in steps mostly but have 2 stick ladders as well.

Every tree has a lean of some sort IMO and you can just position the screw ins so your leaning towards the tree.

Same for any stick ladders.

I weight 225 so I know what you mean about being heavy on a small platform.

I made most of mine out of real heavy steel and they are chained with heavy chains to the tree. Lag bolted too.

I needed my ATVs winch to get them up there. LOL

BUT -I feel safe.

Good Luck with yours!

Re: i think i\'m ready...

So far I am o.k. with my laddder stand, glad everytime I get there and its still there. I think strap ons can be concealed better because of not being able to spot the rungs on the ladder.

I would suggest a ladder stand and prayer that the locals aren't scumbag treestand stealing thieves. I feel safe in my ladder stand.

Re: i think i\'m ready...

My buddy and I both use hang ons with ratchet straps or chains and lags to secure it. My buddy makes climbing sticks and we use tree steps also. We both weigh over 250 and he is much better with heights than he used to be. It takes some time but you'll get used to it.

I use the hang ons a lot. They are great as far as no one finding them. I have one on a 120 acre piece of property, and the land owner hasnt found it yet bc the steps face away from the 4 wheeler trail and I leave the platform up when I am not there. When i hung stands on the Grisby the added an extra ratchet strap to all stands to increase their stability. Good idea if you ask me.

Re: i think i\'m ready...

i use nothing but hang on stands. i have 3 API alumiloc magnums . i just got an Ameristep grizzly from our archery shop. i will say its a lot better than my APIs , because the seat is more comfortable and it doesnt make any noise at all when i stand up .

those API tuck and roll seats are great for sitting in , but every time i shift a little the straps squeek. i have almost gone to standing up all the time in the API stands i have just for that reason...

i plan on stocking up on the Ameristep stands soon. i know a guy that has a semi load of them ! grin.gif

what ever you use it must be comfortable and not make noise . i leave mine up all the time. i just take out the bottom 5 steps. that makes it harder for someone to take them . plus many people dont like to shinny up a tree 25 feet up just to get a 40 dollar stand.. grin.gif
