AJ Posted November 7, 2004 Report Share Posted November 7, 2004 I have a Boyd JRS on my Howa 1500. They are good stocks. I suggest at least a glass bedding job for best results. Yes, floating the barrel is nothing more than removing wood from the barrel channel until you have the desired gap between barrel and forend. Some old timers say as long as you can slip a dollar bill between the barrel and stock its good enough. I like about .050" gap. The barrel will vibrate and oscillate when its fired. Having enough ofa gap to keep it from hitting the forend is a must for best accuracy. Be sure to use some finish on the forend after you float it.
