Re: Climbing Sticks

I never tried the climbing sticks before, but I have used screw-in treesteps for many years.

Things I have learned over the years while using steps are: (1) the EZY brand of treesteps, with it's "pined" screw, after a period of time, the pin was getting bent and the step could possibly fail. These are also the most expensive line of steps on the market, but they do have nice tapered screws so they will go into trees very easily. (2) the "Grizzly" line of treesteps have a very large, blunt screw tip, making them extremely tuff to screw into trees. I will never buy these because of it. (3) the "Deer-me" line of treesteps have the very same problem as the Grizzy's, very blunt screw!! Don't waste your money on these either. (4) lastly, I prefer the "rod" type of treesteps, and the ones put out by Gametracker I rate the best. They are made in the USA and have the tapered screws as well. I see now that Gorilla must of bought the Gametracker brand out. But either way, I like these steps, and they are much cheaper than the EZY brand.

(5) don't even think about "making" your own treesteps!! Why would you rsik your life???? Treesteps are made by companies that test and rate them for strength!! Don't chance it by making your own!! If you figure the cost in over many years they are cheap insurance!!

Re: Climbing Sticks

I bought the Ameristep 16' climbing sticks from Wal-Mart for $39 and they work very well. The climbing sticks with my treestand have a combined weight of nearly 40 lbs, which is a bit much for packing very far. The sticks are far easier to attach to a tree than the screw in steps. I have used mine a lot this year. I don't know about making my own, I would hate to think how much they would weight if made of steel.
