Finaly tested my new load. (pics)

I finaly got to test my new SST load for deer season.

This is the target I used...Center group is a marginal one and a half inch group 2 inches high at 100 yards. I realized after I fired it that the "flier" (high and right of other 2) was a bullet I had pulled from a damaged case and then reloaded but did not intend to use it to shoot a group. The round circled in yellow is a single test shot fired from about 325 yards with same center hold. Any Ideas on velocity based on the points of impact and estimated ranges AJ?

Here is several views of a single bullet fired through a row of Milk jugs. Completely destroyed the first 2 jugs, split the third and then lodged in the 4th. Bullet was recovered from the 4th jug in the line.

In case you wondered the recovered bullet weighs 100 Grains, which is 66% weight retention.

Nope, with a load 2" high at 100 and 4" low at 325, using a 150 gr SST would mean you are shooting 3385 fps. Now that's impressive for a short barreled 30-06.

Reasons for not being able to give a velocity answer:

1. How did you measure the estimated range? I am not trying to run you down, but how accurate are your range estimates? Always verify with rangefinder. The only estimation I trust is the rangefinder, and thats after a few readings.

2. A one shot group does not say much. I would expect the group to be at least 3.5" and probably closer to 5". Was this bullet at the top, center, or bottom of the group? Who knows?

To give an accurate velocity based on trajectory, you need accurate range determination, wind information, and drop measurement of the center of at least a 3 shot group.

That's what I figured...

1 The range estimation is probobly poor...the 100 is measured but the other is not. Wish I could afford a rangefinder...of course a chronograph would be just as expensive as a rangefinder...

2 yes a one shot group is not exactly definitive and the 3385 figure proves either I shot high or the range is mis-estimated. A group would sort that out I supose...was running low on rounds and time at that point.

It seems it should at least be more than adequate for deer though.

Sorry I don't have pics of the jugs...didn't have the camera at the range...
