Guest ronin
I was out scouting last week and ran across the largest flock I'd ever seen. They were all walking from one small hill to another via a small saddle. I stopped counting at 59 birds. Absolutely amazing!
Lumpy
Re: Huge Flock Hopfully you saw them on the land you'll be hunting. I saw a flock simailar up by you neck of the woods. It was off Latrobe Rd. right past Consumes River, kinda gets you fired up for the season.
Strut10
Re: Huge Flock 59???? That's a bunch of birds in one place!! I'd sure love to get a good break on a 59 bird flock in the fall. I'll bet if you sat down and ran a couple "kee-kees" on a diaphragm, you wouldn't know which way to shoot first!!
Guest ronin
Re: Huge Flock As a matter of fact, I'm hunting that property and it's just a few miles from the Latrobe/ Consumnes area.
Guest ronin
Re: Huge Flock I watched with binocs as they walked to their roosts. It's a large meadow with about 10-12 large bull pines that tower over the oaks amongst them. I'm going to simply park myself in the meadow and wait for them to come off the roost on Saturday morning. We do have tons of Turkey in this area but this is the largest flock I have ever seen. No toms anywhere close they roost about 1/2 mile away in thicker country. huntn4bucks
Re: Huge Flock That's pretty cool. Since turkeys tend to bunch up in the winter, the most I've ever seen in one flock was over 70!!! Needless to say we don't have a fall turkey season where I live. Guest ronin
Re: Huge Flock Thats too bad. Fall hunts are pretty challenging. Our population is exploding and there are some in the agriculture industry, (with some DFG support from what I heard), that want to make it open season year round like our hog hunting. Part of the arguement is that the turkey is a non-native species. Personally, I think we can have fairly liberal seasons but an open season would wipe them out. Rut-Nut
Re: Huge Flock Been archery hunting my buddy's ten acres. Saw a huge flock on Wed., but couldn't count- I guessed about 50. Watched them for 6 hrs that day at 80-100 yards. Then at 3:30 they crossed below me at 50y and when they were almost past me, a few turned and walked in t0 33y. I took a shot at a big hen and sliced 2 tail feathers off!!! Proceeded to knock 2 more arrows and miss 2 more- 34 and 35y!!!!! man I can hit my strutting turkey target, but dang if I can hit(and kill) a walking turkey at that range. Oh well, it was exciting to say the least. If they would have only come in about 7 more yards!!!! Went back out Sat. and saw them again, this time they walked in front of me at 60y- I counted 61!!!! SAw them 2 more times in the evening at long range. Well, time to put down the bow and pick up the 22Mag. Got one more try on this coming Sat. hope their routine doen't change!
