joebobhunter4
yes... you can shoot them in the nexk but if you miss the jugular spine of the neck or the wind pipe... hes getting away... my friend hit an antelope in the neck this season hunting them and it never died... tedicast
Re: Ethical shot You definately did the right thing. If you have any doubt about a shot, you are better passing on it. You would be feeling a lot worse if you wounded the deer and didn't recover it. Maybe you'll get another shot at him. Good luck.
Guest tyshe17
Re: Ethical shot good decision. anytime you get a deer you want to harvest in range, and cant get a shot, it makes you second guess what you could have done. Stick with what you know and what you are comfortable with. When I was first hunting I passed deer broadside inside of 100 yards in fields bc I didnt feel I was steady enough. DSGB
Re: Ethical shot I was faced with a similar situation having a buck directly under my stand. I passed on taking the shot, but wish I could've taken that buck. I feel better than I would have had I taken the shot and not recovered the deer, so I think you did the right thing. I've learned that if the shot is questionable, just don't take it. You'll save yourself a lot of grief.

[/ QUOTE ] ....and thats what it amounts to...... I took a shot last year on a straight on buck at roughly 65-yards. I knew I could punch money with my 30-06. I indeed hit where I was aiming. To me that was ethical but if you even second guess yourself for a second..... Do not take the shot.

VtBowhunter
Re: Ethical shot When gun hunting my brother has only taken 2 bucks and both were with neck shots that anchored the buck where he stood. With a gun, it's a lethal shot.
rossman
Re: Ethical shot Since you were hunting with a bow. A neck shot is not a shot to even think about. With a gun, I would say yeah, go for it. As for your buddy, stop considering him a sportsman, if he tries to shoot deer in the neck with a bow. Just my 2 cents!!! --Rossman

Punched a hole in his neck (spine) and he folded like a card table. I would never take that shot on purpose (with a bow) but buddy it was LETHAL. [/ QUOTE ] Jeramie heres the flip sideof that shot.A budy of mine shot a real dandy buck.Hit it in the neck , honestly cant say if he was aiming there or not.It dropped like rock right in its tracks.Somehow it got ahold of the arrow with its mouth while he was climbing down and pulled the arrow out.Without the arrow in the spine it was like it had never been shot, it jumped up, and took off like it had never been touched.Except then my buddy knew he had a nice buck running around with a hole it it and probably spinal damage with no way to even track it.Its not a good shot with a bow IMHO

bowhunt101
Re: Ethical shot I think you did the right thing if you where not comfortable with the shot but myself I would have taken the shot with a high powered rifle at any deer where I could see his neck and probobly most big game.... I am a firm believer in a neck shot, it dont mess up meat unless you eat the neck, and it is pure deadly.... Thats mostly what my uncle shoots for and the same for me unless I have a really good shot at the shoulder and vital area.... I have seen alot of deer shot in the neck and they dropped on the spot so I definitley would take a neck shot with a gun........

Ravin R10 man
Re: Ethical shot did I miss if you were in a tree stand or on the ground???....at 3 & 1/2 yards..angling away, sounds like a dead deer to me.....but then I was not there...LOL..OK I went back and reread that..sounds like he was angling "towards" you ....in that case..it was your call man...and being that as it may....you would not have been able to get drawn, and not busted.... dg
Re: Ethical shot Have you shot at a target at 3 yards with a bow (with sights) before? Most folks haven't.
