Hoyt03
I would never take this shot with a bow, but I had the opportunity today and passed on it. The deer was 20 yards away and was broadside when I drew then turned and was facing straight towards me. I held my pin on its brisket for 20 seconds or so saying no that is not a good shot just wait. So as it turns its walking fast i give it a grunt to stop it and it just turned and bolted, didnt even pause. (Reminded me of when one of the real tree guys did that before and the buck bolted) So looking back I know I could have smoke it straight on but wasnt about to find out the hard way if I could have killed it. Has anyone ever taken this shot and had success, or would you ever consider taking this shot with a bow. I'm kinda glad I passed on the iffy shot angle
kooter
Re: What are your opinions on this shot angle? i saw a show on the outdoor channel and a guy took that shot and killed the buck. Me personally I would NOT take the shot. Good job holding off on that angle.

browning_gold_12
Re: What are your opinions on this shot angle? i took this shot when i was younger. it was a doe, 10yds straight on. aimed for the shoulder/spine juncture. missed a little right, angled straight down throug her, coming out her sack. complete pass thru. she went about 60 yards and piled up. i got lucky. today i would probably pass. VtBowhunter
Re: What are your opinions on this shot angle? At 20 yards out, you did the right thing. If it were within 15 yards, I would take the shot, but that's just me.

hutchies
Re: What are your opinions on this shot angle? If you are deadly accurate at 20 yards then it is actually not that bad of a shot. Dead center of chest you will most likely hit lung and catch come veins coming in. I personally probably would not take it even though I know I could nail it. Tominator
Re: What are your opinions on this shot angle? Well, only you can say. If you didn't feel right about it, I'd say you made the right decision. It's typically not the best of angles. The last deer I shot, however, presented just such an angle, and I took it, and ohiobucks can back me up on this, the arrow hit not 1/2" from where I aimed, just above the brisket. The arrow traveled right down the center of the doe, and exited out just past the rib cage on her left side. She didn't go 60 yards probably, wrapped herself around an oak tree. That's not the best of angles, but I felt comfortable with the shot, and my abilities, and it worked out.
buckee
Re: What are your opinions on this shot angle? [ QUOTE ] At 20 yards out, you did the right thing. If it were within 15 yards, I would take the shot, but that's just me. [/ QUOTE ] I made that shot at 15 yrds once too. The buck looked up at me as I was drawing, so I continued through. At 15 yrds the angle was perfect and I slid the shaft right down under his oesophagus, with him looking straight up at me. He only went 50 yards. If he hadn't been facing directly at me and had been turned slightly one way or the other, I wouldn't have thought about trying to make that shot. It's definately one of those shots where you have to think fast, because there is a lot to take into consideration. Is it an ethical shot? ......yeah, if you have taken everything into consideration and not just tried a pot-luck shot. 20 yrds is a bit far out and the angle changes too. You made a good decission. jbeck
Re: What are your opinions on this shot angle? Good choice hoyt, that is a tough angle. I like the odds in my favor before letting go. broad side or a little quartering away. The bigger the target the better my chances. mo_hunter
Re: What are your opinions on this shot angle? I wouldn't take the shot. I would wait for a better shot and if that didn't happen I'd let it walk. Good choice IMO.

tedicast
Re: What are your opinions on this shot angle? Any shot that you aren't 100% c omfortable taking, is a good shot to pass. If you had to second guess yourself, you definately did the right thing. I would have passed also.

magnatecsteve
Re: What are your opinions on this shot angle? Pass, I will only take broadside or quartering away shots. Will also pass on straight down shots too.
dg
Re: What are your opinions on this shot angle? The doe I killed the other night was quartering too (almost straight). I aimed for inside the shoulder, nailed it, and it went pass thru out behind the ribs on the opposite side. She went 20-30 yards and died quick. rockefeller66
Re: What are your opinions on this shot angle? I feel comfortable enought to take the shot but I only take it with in 20 yards, I have one pin for all shots under 20 yards and I can hit a quarter every time, I have a lot of confidence in my short distance shots and I know just where to place it. I have the confidence to take that shot, just me personally.
vagobbln
Re: What are your opinions on this shot angle? With all the things that can happen (string jumping and such) with bowhunting - if you have to wonder if it's a good shot, it probably isn't. Good choice. PAbowhunter86
Re: What are your opinions on this shot angle? My uncle shot a deer that had the arrow still in it. He shot it about a month after archery season needed. (It was rifle season now.) I guy shot it right in the brisket and the deer was in perfect health. Guest WEEGEE9
Re: What are your opinions on this shot angle? i'm with john on this. i think you can get a lot out of passing on a shot in this sport. your cloose, you can see the shine on his nose, hart pounding, and you make the call to pass.. that takes something lou
rossman
Re: What are your opinions on this shot angle? Definatually Pass. Not a good shot to take at all with a bow. With a gun, smoke him!!! My hats off to you for passing. It is hard to do, when it is crunch time.
