Re: picking a lab pup?

Honest I would check temperment of both parents and as long as they have eye and hip certification I would think they would be a good dog. I have a pal who bought one for $100 and is the best hunter ever... it really depends on how much time you spend with them too.... I would do you research though... smile.gif Good luck....

Definitely learn as much about the parents as possible...especially if the pup is going to be hunted. Like WF_G said, temperment means a lot. You will be able to tell a lot about a pup around its other siblings as well as its mother. You will be able to tell which pup is more advanced in the learning process just by watching them a few minutes...you'll know it when you see it.

Good luck.

Re: picking a lab pup?

Good advise above. I was in your boat last year. I explored a lot of options and then found out through the grape vine that friend of mine was having a litter from good hunting lines. I checked out the parents and checked all their certifications. I ended up getting the pick of the litter.

I know that all the papers in the world on a dog will not mean it will be a great hunter and there are some great hunters that have no papers or certifications. But, certifications are a good starting point. I'd definately look into getting a dog from a litter that has parents with certified hips and eyes. I had a lab with bad hips one time and let me tell you it is terrible watching your buddy gimp around because of a genetic problem.

Good luck. There isn't much better than a new pup.

Re: picking a lab pup?

if you're wanting a hunting lab then I would strongly recommend buying a pup from hunting stock. pups from hunting stock will cost more but IMO it will be well worth the extra couple hundred bucks you will have to pay.

If your still wanting a pup let me know. I'll ask my trainer if he knows of any pups available.

Derek, how old was your lab when he started showing signs of hip problems?

I had a black female. She was a great dog. I never hunted her much, but she was an awesome pet.

I'd say she started showing signs around 2 years old or so. She was carrying too much weight, probably 85 pounds or so and should have been around 70 pounds. I took her to the vet because I noticed her having problems with her hips. The vet told me what weight to get her down to and told me to give her a half an asperin tablet per day. Once I got her weight down it was not as bad. In cold and damp weather I noticed her having problems. During those times I gave her the asperin. She ended up living a good life up to 12 years old before she died of one too many seisures (she was on medication for that too for the last three years of her life).

Her hips could have been worse, but even at how they were, is stinks watching your dog limp around or not want to get up when it is cold outside. I could always see in her eyes that she was full of life, but her body just did not have it in her on some days.

I strongly recommend buying a dog that is certified. One of the best ways to decrease the problem of bad hips and eyes is to reduce the market for those dogs. Spending a couple hundred dollars more to insure you get a dog from good lines will likely end up saving you hundreds of dollars in vet bills and heart ache down the road.

Just my opinion.

Re: picking a lab pup?

It almost bring tears to my eyes to hear this because my best friend/waterfowl hunting sidekick of 4 years has started showing some of the hip signs as of the last 3 weeks, i went home this weekend to see the problem. My mom is taking him to the vet this Friday to get confirmation. He's still full of life and wants to retrieve as bad as ever but i can tell he isnt all out like he usually is, with waterfowl season 2 weeks away i'm concerned that it wont be in his best interest to join me, one doesnt understand how much this hurts!

I pray he'll be able to see another year in the swamps.
