What would you seasoned hunters do?

Here ya go. My house is the closest house to this slough....literally walk out my back door to it. Gets a lot of hunters on it. Where would you expect to have the most success?

Here's an aerial of the area......

Now, here's the same picture, but this time, I marked some stuff on it. Remember....I'm a newbie, so bear with me.

The green marks how high the water NORMALLY gets in the winter.

The blue spot is a duck blind that was just built....I have to be 100 yards from this blind (legally), so I thought the island would be a decent spot. (It's a point this time of the year, but once the water goes up, it'll be more like an island. Plenty of cover, would just have to trim a few saplings.

Now....let's hear what you would do.....

Some of the timber floods on the east end, which could be a prospect... confused.gif Come on....help a new guy out.... wink.gif

(The green "arm" that I drew, is more or less a drainage ditch. FWIW..... crazy.gif)

Your setup is pretty good. Catch the wind coming out of the North and the birds will be right in your face. A Northwest wind wouldn't be bad either. Ducks typically land into the wind so a good North wind is ideal for your blind. Once the water gets into the timber...BE THERE!!! I love hunting the timber so I'm a little biased.

Here's a link from DU with some good tips on decoying: Decoy spreads

Looks like you have a promising setup. Best of luck.

can you cut a timber hole in this area? If it's legal, cut down a few trees in a naturally open area where the water will flood. We do this in Iowa and the hunting is unreal.

For you to have the most success, and b/c it would be really easy for you to do since you're already right on the water is to simply keep tabs on where the ducks are . . . . get a pair of binos and check'em out several times a week and take note of where they like to be in particular conditions. . . then its as simple as beating them to their destination.

Man, if the wind were right, sitting out on that point would be pretty cool. I'd throw a line of decoys out down each side and leave a nice area right out in front of the point open. Could work out real well with a lot of shot opportunities.

I agree, you really need to get out there and observe how the ducks are using it and adjust your set up as you see fit. If the water gets up into that timber, look out. I'd find the general area the birds are using and just throw out 6 to 12 decoys and find a tree to tuck up against. Greenheads just love flooded timber. Much more fun to hunt than open water, IMO.

Hows the bass fishing ?

Ya know....I'm not really sure. It is really thick in there along the edges, and a lot of work to get a boat in there. The water is kinda stagnent (sp?) but there are fish in there. I'm trying to get some of my buddies to noodle in there....I'm chicken though... blush.gif

See a lot of carp.....not sure what else is in there....not much of a fisherman, really.

what was the red spot? if i was to look at the pic and have to guess, i'd try to position myself close to the middle with a good field of fire, but, watch the flight patterns, maybe even toss out a few decoys and call 'em a bit
