DOGS HARASSING DEER

I was out hunting with a buddy of mine on Nov.4 (evening hunt) and my buddy saw two dogs that had chased a nice 5x5 whitetail right up to his stand. He didn't get a chance to shoot as he had just got into his stand and was setting up. when he heard the deer coming and saw the horns. This buck had his tongue hanging out and was not about to pause long, even when my buddy grunted to attemp to stop him. He saw the dogs shortly after the buck ran off. An irish setter and a collie. Has this ever happened to anyone else? It sure upset my buddy and I wasn't too impressed either, as I didn't see anything that evening as a result .

Re: DOGS HARASSING DEER

i use to rent a farm that had a lot of wild dogs on it, & if you ask 10 people about dogs you will get 10 different answers. i personally can see both sides of it, i have had dogs run deer to me more often than i have seen them chase them away. but they have made the deer skittish.& remember the deer will be busy worrying about the dogs to notice you. some of my guys would shoot the dogs, but i did'nt like that idea. so i would take my chances.

Re: DOGS HARASSING DEER

This may sound harsh but, I say bye,bye doggies. I figure deer have a tough enough time with natural predators and hunters let alone being chase down by a domestic dog....and if the owner is is so unatentive to allow thier dog to chase down deer especially during the deer season I would say that they don't care much for thier pet...but this is just my opinion,,,

Re: DOGS HARASSING DEER

Thanks for the reply! These dogs aren't wild but belong to two different farmers. This has been the first time this has happened but I dread the thought that these dogs keep harrasing the deer and messing up a good thing. My buddy and I have seen a nice 160 class buck in our immediate area and would like a chance to bag him. The buck that came in that night we were hunting was also an awesome buck. I guess I'll have to talk to the farmers about their canine friends.

the synopsis.I thought I saw it in there a few years ago?I dont have one @ work or I would look @ it.Don't quote me but I thought it said that any dog seen chasing deer could be shot.Dont get me wrong.I am a pet owner & would never go to that extreme.I would let the authoraties handle it.(sp?)

I would talk to the land owners and explain to them that some people aren't as nice as you and will shoot them and see what they do. If they do nothing and this becomes a consistant problem I'd take care if it and no one would be the wiser. Dogs that run deer will mess you up more than they help you. Because they are keeping deer from moving in their normal patterns and that makes it harder for us to decide where deer will move.

I think eastennhunt is right...warn them, talk to the authorities, and if that doesn't work take care of the problem..

Re: DOGS HARASSING DEER

(sp?) my spelling is terrible, sorry.I would love to get a lab to help me shed hunt & go fishing etc... with me.Not for a few years though.Take the law into your own hands?Tick off the other land owners in your hunting area?I dont think so.THey could be a tight knit group & over coffee row decide that you wont hunt anywhere near there again.Or anybody else for that matter.Just my thoughts.I'm not trying to argue or get something going here.

Re: DOGS HARASSING DEER

I hear ya Sasksheds! I don,t want to upset the apple cart with the farmers because they gave my buddy and I permission to hunt their land. This area also has a pasture lease attached and we have permission to hunt as well. Awesome area but have had another s.o.b. move in on me. About a hundred

and forty yards to my N.E.. He knows my buddy and I are there, becaause we've talked to him.

SORRY OFF TOPIC.......

Re: DOGS HARASSING DEER

I have 2 labs and they don't chase the deer near my place, I don't give them the chance. That doesn't mean they're penned, I just keep close tabs on them and discipline them if they leave the yard sight. Touchy situation, they are the landowners dogs.... either way dogs chasing deer is bad and I believe the owner can be charged for harassing wildlife.

Re: DOGS HARASSING DEER

Had the neighbors dogs run across my field just the other day, they wont keep them up. We have had several occasion where they have run deer around here. It really irritate me that the neighbor man hunts and he complained about another neighbors dogs running loose out here when he tried to hunt, but he goes off to his lease and lets his dogs run loose. Think I am going to have to make a dreaded call really soon and let them know that if they dont keep them up I am going to haul them off to the pound.

Re: DOGS HARASSING DEER

we had a hunter experience this this past weekend. he said there wer two dogs running a for sure wall hanger right in front of the stand. every time we go hunting you always hear the dogs barking as if they are running deer every sat. morning that we are out in the woods trying our dangest to put some meat in the freezer. i think if it ever happens to me then i'll have to do something about it like shoot one of them or go make a visit to the owners.

Re: DOGS HARASSING DEER

I would go with the approach of kindly asking the dog owners to please contain their pets on their property. I would make mention of some "other" people have shot dogs for this same reason and that he wouldn't want to see that happen...Since it was the first time you saw them I wouldn't have shot them, but if it continues to be a problem and nothing is done by authorities or owners then the only solution I see to the problem is to eliminate the source of the problem......We had a experience with this about 10-15 years ago and the people were warned and nothing was done....The final straw came when the dogs got a big buck down by our house but couldn't kill him......Needless to say the deer wasn't the only thing that bit the dusk that evening.......That is something That I hate to see happen being as I'm a huge dog lover, but people need to control their animals.....If you can't keep track of your animals then maybe it's time to evaluate not having them......

Re: DOGS HARASSING DEER

My father in law is going through the same thing as he is hunting private ground and five out of the last five hunts two dogs come through chasing deer and ruining his hunt. He has talked to animal control and they said if anything happens to them that in IL there is a new law that if you harm a pet even on your own property it is a class 4 misdomeanor. **** dogs have more rights than humans! He is now hunting with a .410 pistol and will light their rears if they come through again. IMO if they came back the second time it would have been dog season!
