huntrman
I'm looking to purchase an inexpensive shotgun, a pump 20 gauge to be exact. Mostly used for deer hunting. Can someone give me the best model/brand for the money? I'm looking to get one that will be accurate to about 60 yards, as that is as far as I'm probably going to be shooting. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!
Gator
Re: Inexpensive Shotgun? Mossberg 500. think they sell for around 150-180 price range. beleive you can get a slug barrel with it. Top it with a scope, should be good to go IMO.
RangerClay
Re: Inexpensive Shotgun? I would get a Remington 870. Try to get it in 16 ga. you will like that better than the 20. Ranger
drkillemquick
Re: Inexpensive Shotgun? I would also agree with Ranger the 870 is a great workhorse of a shotgun. You can buy the express version which is even cheaper, and upgrade barrels and stocks as you see fit.
Tsmola
Re: Inexpensive Shotgun? yeah go with a 12 gauge 870. Great gun. Little bit more pricey than some other kinds you can get, but not too bad. 20 gauge will work, but I think 16 or 12 will be a better choice. AJ
Re: Inexpensive Shotgun? Probably the best deer slug gun is the H&R Ultra Slug Hunter. It comes in 20 ga or 12 ga. It is good out to 100 yards. It is a single shot and not a pump though. If you feel undergunned, or you need a back up shot, you need more practice. For a cheap but decent quality repeater, the Mossberg 500 would be the cheapest. The Remington 870 would be the next step in price. As would be the Winchester 1300. Guest deldeer
Re: Inexpensive Shotgun? another vote for the h&r......by far the best shotgun for the money for deer....i do own several 870's, great guns, no complaints......im not a mossberg fan at all though....good luck
huntrman
Re: Inexpensive Shotgun? Well meet the new addition to my arsenal... Mossberg 500 Slugster Rifle barrel Accepts 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells Synthetic Stock Picked it up tonight at Dicks Sporting Goods for $199. Also picked up a cleaning kit, and the new Limbsaver Recoil Pad. I know I know, it doesn't kick hard enough for a recoil pad, but I thought I'd give the Limbsaver one a try anyways. Looking forward to a fun shotgun season! I have a few questions about this gun for someone that has a slugster or a 500. How much is another barrel? I want to shoot skeet and birds with this gun as well. Also, the book says the magazine can hold 6 shells, does this come stock or is there a plug somewhere? I know I can only have 3 loaded at once for deer hunting which I shouldn't need more than 1, but for skeet it would be nice to have a full magazine. Just curious is all. Thanks for the recommendation(s) guys, I really do appreciate it.
AJ
Re: Inexpensive Shotgun? [ QUOTE ] How much is another barrel? [/ QUOTE ] $100 - $130 per barrel. [ QUOTE ] Also, the book says the magazine can hold 6 shells, does this come stock or is there a plug somewhere? [/ QUOTE ] The magazine should have the plug installed. See your instruction manual. [ QUOTE ] but for skeet it would be nice to have a full magazine. [/ QUOTE ] Nope, skeet and sporting clay ranges only allow 2 shots max in the gun. huntrman
Re: Inexpensive Shotgun? Ah yes to the 2 in the magazine, forgot about that. Thanks for the reminder. I don't plan on going to any ranges though, just shooting at mom's in the country.
Shaun_300
Re: Inexpensive Shotgun? I love my 870, it's a 12ga though. I'd like to find a used 20ga or 28ga in nice shape, and I'll get the 870! Can't go wrong with these guns, and the prices are pretty good as well. HarvDog
Re: Inexpensive Shotgun? I have a Remington 870 12 gauge and absolutely love it. Especially now with my newly refinished stocks. (Thanks again Chris).
huntrman
Re: Inexpensive Shotgun? Okay, now I'm in the market for a good sling for this bad boy. I would prefer to take advantage of the little holes where one would clip on, instead of the slip on kind. Any ideas?

AJ
Re: Inexpensive Shotgun? I only use neoprene slings now. They make the gun feel so much lighter. They stretch so as you walk the gun does not bounce on your shoulder. Much better! I prefer the Butler Creek sling.

Guest lovinbowhuntin247365
Re: Inexpensive Shotgun? the plug is inside the magazine, jsut take the cap off the magazine , take off the barrel, and tip the gun upside down and shake it a little ... its jsut a 1/4 inch wood dowel ... and the magazine does hold six shots
