A question for the computer elitests in here

I have a problem, and hopefully someone can help me out. Within the last week, it takes almost 10 minutes to shut my computer down. I tried running live update for Nortons, and can't access the Symantec server. I tried running virus scan, and nothing shows up. I tried downloading Spybot search and destroy, and it won't let me do it unless I update the software first. I can't access the update server to do that. Any suggestions for me before I kick this thing through my office wall??? Please float any suggestions that you can think of my way. confused.gifcrazy.gifmad.gif

Re: A question for the computer elitests in here

Try this. Right click your task bar and go to task manager. Look at the processes that are running. If you see alot of things under your profile that could be spyware. Stop those processes and see if that helps. Sounds to me like you have a ton of spyware or a trojan on your machine. Try downloading MS Antispyware.

Can you access any web site at all?

If you can try http://www.trendmicro.com/spyware-scan/

Let me know how this goes. I will watch for your reply.

Check your system 32 directory for any new exe files that have been installed. Then check the task manager to see if they're running. If you don't recognize those executables or haven't installed anything since this started, reboot into safe mode and delete those exe. then run virus scan and adaware

If you are using Windows XP you can reset your settings to an earlier date, before you started having that problem. That might work. and also that is about the limit of my knowledge (or lack thereof)

Good Luck

Actually you would think that this would be the way too go but it's the biggest NO,NO you can do if there is a virus involved......

The restore partition is also infected if it's a virus or a trojan,, so what happens is when you do the restore all you are doing is re-installing that virus or trojan..... wink.gifwink.gif

System Restore is very missleading, in a sense..

Use a online virus scanner to scan your system if you are unable to run updates,,,, if a virus is found be sure to disable System Restore before you take any action,, when you are sure all viruses or trojans are removed the re-activate the system restore this way you aren't re-installing any viruses.... wink.gif
