Guest tyshe17
the first time I ever deer hunted, I didnt know to have my scope turned down, and had it on 9x. I had a basket rack 9 point come out 23 yds from me in an open field following a doe. I looked through the scope, and all I saw was brown. I shot and just grazed the bucks belly. We trailed it for 400-500 yards in the snow and only saw the couple drops of blood right at impact. Anyways, he got away and I had all off season to learn how stupid that was:)

MUDRUNNER
Re: Having a Little Fun.... Back when I was a rookie I hung my loc-on stand in a tree that was about 6 inches around. It looked like a hot spot so I figured what the heck.I went out with some buddies the night before and wasn't feeling to hot when I woke up in the morning.Once the wind started blowing and the tree started swaying it didn't take long to realize I wasn't gonna have a quiet morning sittin in the stand.Holy snikees did I feel crummy. Tominator
Re: Having a Little Fun.... Numerous times have forgotten to tie my bow off to my stand before climbing. One that sticks out in my mind, in my first year of hunting, was heading out in 70 degree weather in full insulated camo (too poor to buy uninsulated), with a huge towel around my neck to take care of sweat, my 20lb stand strapped to my back, a huge rope also around my neck, then trekked 1/2 mile through the thickest cover Kelleys Island had to offer, dehydrate yourself, make all kinds of noise and disturbance, only to hunt 80 yards from a road. Funny, never did see a deer that day. Hindsight: wear drab clothes when it's hot, even if it's not camo, use a little twine to haul bow up into the stand, forget the towel, and have a buddy drop you off on the road. jbeck
Re: Having a Little Fun.... Had my daughter yell High Deer to a pretty good mule deer buck i wanted to look at a little closer. I tried to explain that I needed her to not yell to the deer, but she let me know the deer wouldn't know she was there if she didn't yell. ( How do you argue with that logic) By the way, she went shopping with Mommy the next day.
rockefeller66
Re: Having a Little Fun.... WELL, last week we set out our leafriver cams and we had an awesome pic of this buck we have been wathcing the last 3 years, this year he is 4.5 years old and will score 160+, I have found his sheds for the past 2 years and have fallen in love with this buck!!! We have gotten a few pics of him through out the years but this one was GREAT, i was messing around with the cam and scrolling through the options and accidentally hit "Format" then next thing I know the screen says "No Images"!!!!!! I deleted the pics!!! My heart sank to my stomach, we did get to look at the pic on the little screen on the cam but never got a real good look at him like we would have on the computer!!!!! I was mad but he will stay on our land and we got 2 leafrivers setup over scrapes and 2 are near his home core area, hopefully we get another pic!!!!! Guest asilvia68
Re: Having a Little Fun.... Well here is a good rookie story for you all. 10 yrs ago when I first started hunting BP I got all setup in my stand, used all cover scents, did everything your suppose to do. Well after about 2 hrs of sitting I hear that crunch. Here comes my chance. Nice doe comes in at about 30yrds. I setup, place the shot on her shoulder and pull the trigger. THUD...what the heck?? I pull back the bolt and see I forgot to put a cap on the nipple. HOLY $%^& my bag is 15ft down on the ground with my caps staring up at me...DOH needless to say that has never happened again!! Guest WEEGEE9
Re: Having a Little Fun.... it's 11:30, and it's been five hrs. i figured to have an apple and screw in a tree step to my right side to hang my pack from.. hang the bow, turn around face the tree, stick the apple in my mouth, and try screwing the tree step with my left hand. thats hard to do for me. banging the step into the bark to get a bite, and i look over my right sholder. and see a huge doe and her two kids just staring at this fool with an apple in his mouth beating a tree with a step. i only tell this story to other deer hunters...... MossySNPR
Re: Having a Little Fun.... Clearing away a stand area, windy week, so I pushed down an old dead hanging tree that was leaning over my trail and was ready to go sometime. Anyways, it teeter-tottered on some type of grown in stump in the ground, swung up and scraped up my chest, ending its reign by exploding itself on my chin, chipping my tooth and knocking me on my !@#. Your classic "Well, I was watching the top as it slowly fell and was greeted by it taking my head off from the bottom." Nothing a few damp clothes and a nice massage couldn't handle! unioncountyslayer
Re: Having a Little Fun.... Well, the most regretful thing I ever did was not giving a buck enough time to expire. I was hunting at my wife's family farm. The night before I had killed a nice 8 point. I got into stand the next morning and an even nicer 10 point came out. I shot him and watched him bleed out in the middle of a soybean field (so I thought). As soon as he went into the edge of the woods I climbed down and went to get my four wheeler. As I got back he was laying against a tree and stood up when he saw me. I didn't have time to get another shot off and never found him. I still dream about that deer and what I did wrong!
