My ML Buck

After a week of warm weather, I was getting depressed about hunting. The bucks were not interested in does. We had a day of cold rain, followed by a day of 40+ mph winds, and a cold front. Things were looking up. This morning it was 31 degF when I left to go hunting. I had high hopes of seeing some bucks at least chasing the does.

The morning started alright. I decided to sit on the ground today and watch an edge between a thicket and some open hardwoods. I saw a small 6 point that responded very quickly to my grunt tube. I left him walk as we are under orders from the landowner of 8 points or better. I see a single doe, then a doe with twins come by. I heard another guy in our group shoot and figured he had his deer.

I decided to tip toe down the fenceline that borders the two properties I hunt. I have permission to hunt both sides, so its no biggie which side they are on. While still hunting, I see some fresh turkey scratchings. I would take a turkey, and hey, its the last day of firearms turkey. I slowly make my way over 500 yards or so and hear a big bird taking off. I looked up and saw big birds flying up into a tree. I ever so slowly sneak a bit closer and start checking them out. I could not tell if they were buzzards or turkeys. The light was wrong to tell color, and the pine branches were obstructing most of the view. I thought about sitting down and waiting for them to do something, when I looked further up the fenceline and see a doe.

The doe ducked under the fenceline and I move in a bit closer and grunt at her. The must have liked that sound since 6 deer be bop their way to me. Too bad they are all does. I see another group of 5 does about 50 yards ahead. WOW, good heard of does. Then I catch movement on my side of the fence. I see a deer chasing a doe.

I get a glimpse of the buck and he is a good one. I grunt and he stops, but his chest are covered by limbs. He grunts back and the doe makes a b-line for the fence. Over she goes and the buck is going after her. Once he made it to the fence row, I slammed him. He dropped on the shot. Quietly but quickly I reload and ease up to check it out. He is dead. WOW!

He is a main frame 8 point with some sticker points off both of his G2s and nubbins on his G3s. If you go by the "hang-a-ring" method, it is a 12 point. Going by 1" time length, he is a 10 point. He has a lot of mass and is a decent sized deer for these parts. He has a 21" outside spread, had live weight of 204 lbs, dressed weight of 162 lbs. His neck is about 32" in circumfrence. Its definately one of my nicest deer.

The landowner said he would kick me off the grounds if I did not get it mounted, so its going in on Monday. My first mount. Deer buggies are great! I hoofed it back to the parking area and grabbed the buggy. I hoofed it back with my buddy and it was a piece of cake getting it out. I highly recommend them. Sorry the first pic is cut off. My buddy is not a great photographer.

So--were they turkeys or buzzards????

LOL! I forgot all about the birds when I saw this dude! I am really not sure what they were.

Tedicast,

Yep, I am 2/2 with the Savage. Its a sweet gun!

JB,

Yep, it does fold up. It should store in the back of the car. You may have to fold the seats down or something, but it should fit.
