Changing a deer's "attitude"

Picture this...during the course of a deer's daily jaunt, he's got one thing on his mind mostly...danger. He's constantly looking, listening, smelling. That's his constant "attitude". There are a few things that you can do to change this attitude. Just getting his mind from looking for danger, and onto something else to pique his curiosity, if only for a few seconds, affords you a possible shot, extra movement etc. Some things aren't always foolproof, but will sometimes still work for you in order to get a shot off. Here are some of the things I use that help out.

Scents Most manufacturers claim to have the "magic potion". "Buy thier's, cause it's the best"! Whether it's doe in heat, tarsal gland or a curiosity lure of some sort, most every commercial brand works. They may not work 100 percent of the time, but if you get a buck to stop in a shooting lane to smell it just for a few seconds...it's done it's job.

Decoys .Sometimes I think using decoys is a double edge sword. It either works or works against you 50 percent of the time. A few times i've used mine, I had deer come in...spot the decoy, and after not getting the attention of the decoy through repeated foot stompings, snorts, head bobs and the like. Once they saw that the decoy was intently "staring" into one direction...they headed off thinking there was possible danger where the decoy was looking. Even though it made the deer uneasy to a degree, it did it's job for the simple reason that it got the attention of incoming deer for a brief moment and not on looking up into your tree.

What are some of your ways you use to change thier attitudes?

PS...Not claiming to "know it all" but trying to help out some newbies to our sport.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Re: Changing a deer\'s \"attitude\"

this might sound crazy, but it works about 90% of the time.....if i have a deer walking, & does'nt seem like it will be stopping any time soon, i snort (like a deer) at them when they step into a shooting lane..man!!!! they will put the brakes on and start looking for the deer that snorted....but you better be ready to shoot, because they will be looking in your direction......sometimes they will pick up the pace, and leave but they will turn around and come sneaking back to find out what is going on........
