Anybody been "scoped" while hunting?

I saw this on another forum, and it's one of my pet peeves too. I hate it when other hunters are too lazy to use binoculars and instead use their rifle scopes to check you out.

It happens to me at least once a year during the rifle season, sometimes more. I see another hunter in the distance, so I raise my binoculars to see if it's someone I know. When the binoculars come into focus, I see some jerk pointing his rifle at me looking through his scope. This absolutely burns me up. Chances are on some of those occasions there was a cartridge in the chamber and the safety was off.

My view is you should always look through binoculars first if you are unsure of something. You should not look through a scope until you have verified your target. What are your views?

I totally agree, and though i have never caught someone doing it,i am sure someone has "scoped" me. When i took the hunters safety course, one of the first things the instructor stressed about hunting situations was, "Identify your target, and always use your binoculars, not your scope. Would you feel safe if i pointed a loaded gun at you now? Why should it be any different in the woods."

Re: Anybody been \"scoped\" while hunting?

I was sitting in behind some small evergreens once watching for deer at the edge of a wood-lot, when I saw another hunter working his way toward me in the slash.

I stood up so he could see me, hoping he would skirt around me, but as I stood up and waved my hand, up came his shotgun. (he was about 50 yards from me). My heart sank, my life passed before my eyes and I thought I was a gonner, as I looked down the bore of a 12 gauge loaded with SSG(buckshot). I yelled at the top of my lungs as I dove to the ground. I must have turned 5 different shades of white or grey. shocked.gifcrazy.gif

The guy never acknowledged me or apologized or anything...I was ticked to say the least, but I felt so sick to my stomach at the time, that I just let him walk away.

What an idiot and what a scary moment.

I've also still got a small piece of 303cal shrapnel in my leg, from a near kill shot on me from over 35 years ago. That's another story.

I spoke to my local EnCon guy about this and he said that he actually gets scoped several times a year. Of course they are dressed in all green and from a distance they appear to be a hunter. He says that he sees them clear enough to be able to tell what they are doing!! Can you believe people!!

Re: Anybody been \"scoped\" while hunting?

Pretty scary to have that happen, the people that do this are "idiots" plain and simple. Why would they do such an idiotic thing. Buy some binoculars and use them, not your rifle scope!! These are the slobs that take to the deer woods and the ones that ruin hunting for the ones that know how to be safe and practice good sportsmanship. Someone gets hurt over someone being a slob and idiot!!
