huntrman
As you all know I got that Mossberg 500 Pump 20 gauge a few days ago. Now I'm wondering what ammo to get? Some guys are telling me that sabot slugs are the way to go since the barrel is rifled. Others are telling me that sabot slugs do weird things out of this gun. Who to believe? Thought I'd come here and see what everyone that has a Mossberg 500 thought. Also, what brand/model is the best? I know Federal and Remington make good ammo, but what model. Thanks! lil hunter
Re: Shotgun Ammo? You said it's a rifled barrel, I'm assuming that would mean it either has a scope, or rifle sites on it. I don't see any reason not to shoot sabots out of it. You may wanna use some foster style slugs for a cheaper alternative while siting in, but sabots would be my first choice for the gun. If you can afford it, get you a couple boxes of different brands of sabots to try, and see what shoots best. Pretty much all brands of sabots are alright, but different guns shoot different brands better. Good luck.
AJ
Re: Shotgun Ammo? If you have a rifled barrel, I would get sabots. If you have a smoothbore barrel with rifled sights, you have to shoot the standard rifled slugs. Personally, I would not use rifled slugs to sight in then start shooting sabots as there will be a significant change and the lead build up in the bore will require cleaning with a good solvent, stiff bronze brush, and lots of elbow grease. Like Lil Hunter mentioned, grab as many different types as you can and see which one shoots best for you.
huntrman
Re: Shotgun Ammo? Yeah I am shooting those Remington Sluggers to get it sighted in, then I will switch to sabots to see how they shoot. If they are somewhat close then I will adjust to the sabots and if not, I'll just use the sluggers.
Tominator
Re: Shotgun Ammo? Go with the sabot. Maybe narrow your search to Lightfields, Winchesters, and there's a couple other new ones out there like the copper solids that are pretty accurate. the lightfields and winchesters pattern best in my gun. brad dryden
Re: Shotgun Ammo? You can shoot either rifled of sabots out of the gun even if its rifled or not just find the ammo that shoot well out of your gun.
