RTF
Re: what to do with a swan? Not sure if that bird falls under federal guidlines with the Dept of Interior. If so you may not even be able to give it away.
clayman
Re: what to do with a swan? RTF. It was a legally taken bird, by a legally licensed hunter. The same rules apply as would "gifting" any other legally taken game to another party. Just to be safe, If he did give it away, I would recommend doing it with a written note that explains the gift and includes license and permit numbers so it can be easily verified by a CO if it ever came to that. Coles, you shot the smallest one of the flock didn't you? NEVER shoot the bigger birds if you intend to eat them. Look around on the web and see if you can find any advice. The one swan that I've tried was tougher than shoe leather. It's one of those cases of "boil the bird, throw out the bird with the water and eat the pot". I would think that if you breast it out, tenderize the heck out of fit with a meat hammer and marinate, it should be ok. But no matter how you cook it, don't be surprised by the results. Bow Hunter Derek
Re: what to do with a swan? I'd grind it up and make jerky out of it. I've never tried swan, but I can't imagine it tasting very good. Jerky makes almost anything edible.
coles
Re: what to do with a swan? i didnt give it away. i just meant how should i cook it in my subject. but i wont be surprised on the meat. i wasnt expecting it to be good or tender. just thought i would try it since i didnt have the money to mount it and it would have been unethical to just throw it away. my parents always said you got to eat what you kill. i learned that the hard way( never shoot a bunch of black birds if you dont want to eat em)

It may just be the way I read your response. Yes, Swans do fall under the Migratory Bird Act. However, as far as i am aware...and this is the point I was trying to make in my response to your question... is that there is nothing in the migratory bird act that prohibits a hunter from gifting his game to another individual. I could be completly wrong about that, and humbly stand for correction if that is the case.
RTF
Re: what to do with a swan? From my stand point I deal with migratory game birds in the taxidermy business. Under no circumstances can I gift anything away if the original owner forfiets his bird, even to myself. All migratory game birds must be destroyed if not returned to the original owner. clayman
Re: what to do with a swan? That may be a specific regulation for taxidermists, and others in the fur buying trade. What's funny, is that it's perfectly legal for my taxidermist to mount a bird that he himself has killed and then donate it to local DU banquets as a door prize - he does not sell them as it is illegal to sell migratory birds or bird parts. He donates mounted ducks to a handful of local DU chapters in our area every year. I've asked game wardens here about gifting birds, or simply trading a duck for an elk stake between friends. I was told it's perfectly legal as long as the bird can be traced back to the person who killed it.
