Tominator
We had a very cold winter in 1977, and then the blizzard in 1978, and that pretty much wiped out our huntable populations of quail here in Ohio. The DNR has tried re-stocking them numerous times, but Ohio's agricultural practices just can't support enough habitat for them. A few years ago some of the stocked quail made it to my field. I had a covey of a dozen birds or so hanging out for a while. I can remember my dog pointing the covey one night, and to my surprise the covey exploded. Both the dog and I just kind of looked at each other slack jawed. Then we sat and listened to them call each other back. That was fun just watching them zip past me as the sun was setting. They are fun, and I do miss hunting them.
WaCoyote
Re: Where\'s the love for the Quail???? [ QUOTE ] I see alot of post's about pheasants and even rabbits, but none about quail. I live in southern Indiana and we dont have wild pheasants. Only pheasants I get to shoot are the ones I pay for. However we do have quail and in some area's pretty solid amounts of birds. The same day I got scared by deer. I flushed a convey of about 8-10 birds. Season came in on the 4th. Should be getting the pointer back in another week. And then its the Britt going to the trainer. [/ QUOTE ] I got lots of love for quail!! I've only got one so far though. I retired my old boy so I don't have a dog to use for them and it's hard to get them to bust without a dog. He's just an old stoved up porch dog now! I'll post when I get some. I'll be going down wednesday to a really bird rich area so we'll see what happens. Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Where\'s the love for the Quail???? I've got tons of quail (both Bob's and Blue's) on the ranch I hunt. I don't have any bird dogs, but it's no problem to get a limit. Just ride around in the jeep until you spot a covey. Get out, load the shotgun and get after them! On a good day I'll see 20 - 30 coveys just by riding around.
Shaun_300
Re: Where\'s the love for the Quail???? I've never seen any quail up in this neck of the woods, it would be a blast to hunt them though.
