Anyone else in College and trying to get a good year of bow hunting in? I like almost 4 hours from our land and drive back every weekend from the last weekend in Oct. to the 3rd weekend in Dec. to go bowhunting, really puts a dampen on the time I got for school work but I make it work, just curious if anyone else is trying to fit college and bow hunting in the same schedule?

Re: Balancing College and Bow Hunting...

Yep....doing it now unfortunately.

I finally get to know an area pretty well, then move off. crazy.gif

This year, I asked around for permission. Finally got 85 acres to hunt, and have seen a lot of deer! Finally starting to figure this land out, so I'm hoping for a nice buck this week! So far, I'm still driving home on the weekends to hunt my other spots, but this place I have permission on is just what I need. 15 minutes from my dorm, free land to hunt, lots of deer. I hunt on Tuesday and Thursday because I don't have class until 11 on those days. You just gotta ask around!! wink.gif

Yes and it sucks! I have class that takes up two full days a week and work 2-11 5 days a week. All I have are mornings after a 40 minute drive and it stinks, but it's better than nothing so I'll make due.

It can be tough at times. But throw a job in the mix and things really get interesting. I drive an hour to class, one way, every day. I've got a class schedule that allows me to hunt in the morning as well as the afternoon as well. If I have work in the afternoon (Wed, Fri, Sat) I will more than likely hunt in the mornings. But I sure put on a lot of miles this time a year. I'm averaging between 120-160 miles a day.

Re: Balancing College and Bow Hunting...

yes i'm doin it right now....i hunt on tuesdays, thursdays, fridays, sat, and sundays. I am fortunate that school is only 20 minutes from home south and my lease is 20 minutes north of my house so it works out nice. I work on mondays and wednesdays and sometimes on the weekends. I hadnt worked a weekend all of october, but i got stuck working this weekend which is opening weekend of muzzle loader. I think i'm coming down w/ the flu blush.gif

Re: Balancing College and Bow Hunting...

Been doing it for the last 6 1/2 yrs. For the first 2 yrs, I was only 45 minutes from home, but the last 4 1/2 I've been 2-2 1/2 hrs from home. I usually try to picks my spots and go home when I think conditions will be best, so as to give myself the best chance I can. grin.gif

I also am going to college and bow hunting. However, I am luckier than most. I am living at my deer camp in NW Wisconsin and commuting to school. I usually get 2 mornings to hunt and 3 afternoons if I want.

It works fine for me because I'm only about 20 minutes from where I hunt. But, I do all my homework as soon as I get it, or the very next day. But, I have it all done by the weekend and hunt then.

Thats the way to do it... but my mother has a catering service and I have to drop my time to hunt to help her. I don't mind helping her at all, but then again I don't get out in the woods to much.

Re: Balancing College and Bow Hunting...

My priorities changed for the 4 years I was away at college. Missed hunting nearly as much those 4 years, but did manage a few times a season when I headed back home for holiday breaks and such. In the meantime, I mainly focused on the other social aspects that are so prevelent when away at school. One of the last things I was worried about was sitting by myself in a treestand when there were so many other white-tails running around campus. :-)

Finally did pattern one of the lovelies, and married her the year after she graduated.

Plenty of life left to hunt...enjoy everything college life has to offer. As the old cliche goes....it is the best 4 years of your life!
