Re: Need help!! Shot deer and back legs kicked high?

Sounds like a good hit to me too! I punched a doe with a .50cal this a couple of weeks ago. I never found a drop of blood but I know I hit her solid. Id keep looking for brown, white, etc. Look in large piles of brush, briars, etc.

Take a dog out. Youd be amazed how well any house dog can and will usually track a wounded animal. He could be miles to just a few yards away.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I shot a cow horn spike last year. He fell down and hollered out while his legs kinda drew up to his body. Then he was quiet and very still.

Not 30 seconds later he jumped up and trotted off into the brush and stood there licking his nose. I never got another shot on him. Found no blood, no fur.....no deer. We looked FOREVER. It made me sick!!!!!! mad.gifmad.gifmad.gif

And the stupid beagle didn't find him either. mad.gif

Complete mystery. confused.gif

It sounds like you hit him good. Sometimes they don't bleed for a while, especially if the bullet hits off a bone and doesn't exit. I shot a good buck in 2001 that did a mule kick and disappeared into the bush. After a little wait my hunting partner went into the bush to follow his trail while I posted in a high spot in case the buck came bursting out of the bush. After 20 minutes, my hunting partner couldn't find any blood. I went into the bush and picked up the deer's tracks and found him piled up 50 yards later. He was hit through both lungs but the bullet did not exit. There was not a single drop of blood until he piled up. His tracks were distinguishable from other tracks because of their width (wide chest = widely spaced tracks, 9 inches or better for a big SK buck).

Like Superguide says they usually hump up quite noticably if you hit them in the gut. If his tail was down, that also usually indicates a good hit. Good luck finding him!

Re: Need help!! Shot deer and back legs kicked high?

Gutshot = The deer would have humped up in the middle

Heartshot = The deer would have jumped straight up in the air and mulekicked.

Every other shot known to man (except spineshots) can result in a deer high kicking as described, including shots that just graze a deer.

Keep looking and eventually you'll find something to indicate the shot location.

I too shot a deer lke that, it kicked up like a mule. Waited and went and looked for blood. None found, and their was 4" of snow on the ground. Found the deer about 80 yards in the swamp deader than a door nail!!!!! Keep looking, until you exaust all efforts! GOOD LUCK
