WaCoyote
Picked some of this up for the area I hunt that has pheasants and ducks so I don't have to use steel for pheasants. Anybody else use it, or know about it? The price is definately good as far as "premium" shotgun ammo goes. I bought the last box of 25- 12 ga. 3" 4's for $17.00. Box says 1550 fps. Thats SMOKIN!!! What I want to know is whether its soft like bismuth or if it's real hard like tunsten iron. And if anybody else has used it. The other premiums are just too expensive for ducks and pheasants IMO as a can use steel if I want to in this spot since the shots arent too terribly far. But theres always that occasional rooster that will jump at 40 and steel doesn't cut it at that range. Oh, lastly. With the chokes would you use a less constricted choke like you would on steel or treat it as if it were lead? Thanks.
AJ
Re: Heavy Steel? I take it this is the stuff you have. Hopefully, thats it. Heavy steel loads are just a large payload of iron pellets. Hevi Steel is a different alloy that is denser than steel, and is close to Bismuth. Anyhoo, I can't find anything that says how hard the pellets are. I can't say I would treat it like lead. I would start with a modified choke and see how they pattern. Moving up to improved modified if I wanted a tighter pattern or down to light modified or even improved cylinder to open it up slightly. Since you are using #4 you could probably even test a full choke. I would only go there if modified or IM was not tight enough. Just remember, its Hevi-Steel not Hevi-Shot. It is still not quite up to lead standards. It should work fine for decoying green heads and the occasional pheasant.
WaCoyote
Re: Heavy Steel? Yep thats the stuff. I did a little research but can't find too much info. It looks like it's hard so the more open choke is in order, just like you said. It's basically the left overs from the manufacturing process of making Hevi-shot. Thats why it's cheap. The weight is between Steel and Hevi-shot, and it's hard like heavi-shot. Anything is better than steel though. Thanks.
