Reloader
I am curious if anyone has recovered bullets from game or jug tests that you could post as pics..just for curiosity. This is a single .308 cal 150 grain SST Interlock fired from a 30-06 into water jugs from 100 yards. Destroyed 2 jugs split a third and lodged in the 4th. DSGB
Re: recovered bullet pics? I have a .270 bullet I recovered from a doe I shot last year. I'll see if I can get a picture of it and post it here. Might not be 'til tuesday, though.
Jeramie
Re: recovered bullet pics? That is cool! Great expansion and it looked like it retained most of its weight! Ive never recovered any load. Ive been shooting 180grn factory loads (corelokt, 30-06) and they have blown through every time. I even hit a doe through both shoulders once and it blew a hole big enough for a popcan.
hutchies
Re: recovered bullet pics? Same here. I shoot he same bullets a Jeramie and have never had one that did not blow thru. I wish I could recover one.
Reloader
Re: recovered bullet pics? The bullet pictured above weighed 100grains after recovery...so only a 66% weight retention. Not bad for a round intended for rapid expansion and maximum shock on deer sized game. Not sure I would use it on anything larger though. AJ
Re: recovered bullet pics? [ QUOTE ] The bullet pictured above weighed 100grains after recovery...so only a 66% weight retention. [/ QUOTE ] You said it blew through 2 jugs, split the third and rested in the 4th jug. Now I don't know how big your jugs were, but thats very acceptable penetration. I don't care if the bullets retain 50% of their weight, as long as they exit, for my intended game, what difference does it make? Looking at your pics and reading what you wrote, I would use them on deer, caribou, or other mid sized game, which is what they are intended for. Now push them at 300 Wby or 300 RUM velocities and that changes things a bit. Still, they are some cool bullets, and good pics. thanks
Guest Xen
Re: recovered bullet pics? i have a .54 cal slug from my first deer and a 7mm bullet from my first antelope - i'll get some pics up - i think those are great momentos from a hunt
WaCoyote
Re: recovered bullet pics? I'm surprised they held together. I did a lot of shooting with the 180 grn sst and they almost always fell apart. I did take 1 deer with it but there was a lot of damaged meat. I hit bone on entry and it just exploded. I found part of the jacket but no lead. I did find the tip in one of my burgers. OUCH! Since then I switched to 150 grn scirrocos. Not trying to slam your choice of bullets by any means just wanted to share.
WaCoyote
Re: recovered bullet pics? Here a couple of recoverd bullets I have. 180 Nosler partition Federal High Energy factory load fired from a 30-06. This bullet was taken from a bucks spine. The deer was quartering away hard at 157 yds. The bullet entered just near the end of the ribcage and entered the spine coming to rest near the shoulders. retained weight 113.3 grns. Notice how the lead core in front of the partion seperated out. The second is a 150 grn Swift Scirroco recovered from a soft freshly tilled wheat field and again fired from a 30-06 at about 2900 fps. 180 yd shot. Retained weight 128 grns. Used the scirroco this year and had a steep downward 60 yd shot. The bullet penetrated through the spine and must have lodged into the lung. I found several holes in the lungs from bone fragments but did not think to dig around in them. I figured I'd find the bullet in the lower chest wall but did not find it. One other report of awesome results was my daughters .260 useing 125 grn partions. Hit a rib on the way in and just exploded shrapnel throughout the lungs and liver. The bullet itself traveled through ribs, 1 lung, the heart, and through opposite leg bone with an exit hole as big as a .50 cent piece. The surprising part was all of the "shrapnel" damage within the vitals.
