Jeramie
Ive shot 180 corelokt for years but this year im making the switch to 150. I picked up a fresh box today. Im getting old enough now that I no longer can justify the pounding shoulder for the overkill. Our deer average 100-120lbs so 180 was major overkill. Hopefully I will feel a huge difference in recoil from the old 30-06! Ill let you know how it tapps out.
Guest Colorado Bob
Re: Switching From 180grn to 150grn! Better make sure your rifle likes them. My Remington 700 30/06 will group 180's all day long. 150 are all over the target. That made my decision very easy. Good luck----CB
AJ
Re: Switching From 180grn to 150grn! Don't expect a huge relief from recoil. As long as the gun likes the lighter bullets, they will indeed work just fine. My old 760 Carbine loved 150 and 165 gr bullets.
WaCoyote
Re: Switching From 180grn to 150grn! Hey jeramie, go buy a good recoil pad. It makes a HUGE difference in felt recoil. I shot my 06 for years without a recoil pad at all. Finally smartened up and bought a nice pad and couldn't believe the difference. I switched to 150's too. I had been shooting 180's before but I started reloading and got good accuracy out of the 150's so made the switch. The deer wont care at all. bwlacy
Re: Switching From 180grn to 150grn! I also switched from the 180's to the 150's. I first shot them at 50 yards and they were centered but about 3 inches high. So backed up to 100 yards and they were even higher, 6 inches high. Why? I don't understand why they were so much higher at 100. I brought them down to 2 inches high at 100. AJ my 760 really likes the 150's also. My last 3 shot group was just over 5/8 at 100, and people keep telling me that pump guns aren't very accurate. Now I just need to shoot a couple of deer and see how they work on game. hutchies
Re: Switching From 180grn to 150grn! I tried 150's this year and they shot horrible. I have no idea why but they were all over the place with or without my Lohman sight in device. Switched back to 180s and bada bing 2 inch groups at 100 yards. Double the distance to 100 yards and the group should be 6" high at 100 which is still 6 MOA. The bullet is not dropping much for a while if its zeroed that high. bwlacy
Re: Switching From 180grn to 150grn! Well after you explain in that way it makes perfect sense. Thanks. The 150's seem to work pretty good on deer also. My son shot a doe at 160 yards last night. Double lung shot, nice exit hole, decent blood trail, and she only went 30 yards after the shot. AJ
Re: Switching From 180grn to 150grn! [ QUOTE ] Have you seen the hole a 180 grn puts in a deer [/ QUOTE ] Do you thnk the 180 gr bullet makes a bigger hole than the 150 gr? Not even close. In fact, the opposite is true. Once you reach the level of the bullet exiting, longer bullets (heavier) do increase damage but decrease damage. Velocity, bullet construction, and target medium, will determine how bullets perform. Comparing a 150 gr spire point and a 180 gr spire point (same caliber) that are shot into the same target at typical hunting distances, the 150 will cause more damage. Its velocity will be higher and the bullet will deform more causing a bigger hole. The heavier bullet will penetrate better since it has a higher sectional density, but it will now "blow up" game as some people think it will. Where I hunt there are a lot of black bears and I hunt with the 180's for the "dual purpose".
