Cull buck or not?

Recommended Posts

What do you all think, this is a 2.5 year old buck and he is a 7 point, don't know what is up but his right side has a brow tine and a little crab claw and his left side has a week four points, he just isn't quite as big as a normal 2.5 year old buck is around our area? You think he has some sort of skeletal damage or bad genetics? Do you think he will ever become a monster buck in say 3 years? Do we shoot him now or see how he looks next year? Thanks and ANY advice is appreciated!

Re: Cull buck or not?

rock---my thoughts are if you and your hunting partners are practicing QDM then you guys need to set a goal on what bucks are killed. This goal should be set on the age of the buck--not antler size or antler quality. The goal is to have a healthy balanced herd. Like we've talked about in here before I don't think genetic culling will work in a free ranging herd. Half those genes came from his mother anyway so even with him gone his mother is still passing those genes--whether or not his mother is around your hunting area or has a different home range is impossible to determine.

That's my thoughts on the subject!
