Alrighty then.....Minnesota has come through for me again, gentleman!!This year, although the deer were plentiful, the weather was not cooperative. However, I left as the deer killing leader once again. This year, I bagged the big one. They took my picture for the local papers and I was in second place for two different "Big Buck" competitions at the local check-in stations. Here was the scenario: Saturday and Sunday we didn't see a single deer, not one brown hair!!! Mike, my buddy's dad, was livid. He was so ticked off that our honey holes showed no deer, we went to state-owned land. 40 yards off the dirt road stood a deer stand which I was hesitant to climb. It didn't look very sturdy, so I stood on the ladder and used the platform as a shooting rest. Fantasizing that I was perched like a sniper, I overlooked about 10 acres of clearcut with a little bit of browse. After about 45 minutes, I see movement, then a rack.I pointed my Savage 30-06 in front of a tree the buck was heading towards and as soon as his front shoulder hit my cross-hairs I let a 165 grain fly. He ran 20 yards and stood there. I shot again, this time a bit higher and he disappeared.I waited 5 minutes and then went to the last place I saw him - it was his last place indeed.I hit him the first time through both shoulders taking out one lung (it was a couple inches lower than I aimed (I sighted in with 150 grain). The second shot was way off!!!! - but in a good direction because it took him in the neck, dead-center.He dressed at 219lbs and is an 11 pointer. Biggest deer in our party by far. I missed first place by 3 lbs in one of the contests (oh well). Here are the pics:
