The Northern Lights

Driving down the road tonight, i see an amazing thing. Purple, pink, and blue waves of light going across the northern sky. What a sight! This was my first time seeing the northern lights, so I had to pull off of the road, and watch them for a few minutes. My advice to anyone who hasnt seen them, go somewhere where you can!! They are awesome! ooo.gif

Re: The Northern Lights

yep, saw them last night!

my entire household, save me and two sons, were up puking last night. i got up at 1:30, peeked outside and noticed a glow in the north. confused.gif i figured i'd go check that out, because that isn't normal. stepped out on the deck and sure enough, some red way up north, but mostly green and yellow dancing sheets all the way from the eastern horizon to the western horizon.

this is the 4th or 5th time i've seen them. smile.gif

Re: The Northern Lights

Its too bad that you guys don't all get to see them. They are truley awesome.

We had some very defined blue/green snaps(moves quickly) yesterday with reds and yellow surrounding them. The lights you saw to the "North" were right over my house last night. They were almost brighter than the moon.

A standing invitation for anyone who wants to see the lights. Around beginning of January when its -50F up here, the lights are the brightest and most common. I invite anyone to come up and watch them....bring handwarmers! grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif I'll provide the hot chocolate.

acutally I will see if I can get some on video....

What's the story behind them like how do they do that?

It's a long story, but I'll shorten it. Gases are expelled from the sun during intense solar activity and are trapped by the Earth's magnetic field where they are concentrated at the poles, become ionized and glow different colors. (Kinda like a neon light.) Different elements glow different colors.

Re: The Northern Lights

Gotta wholeheartedly agree with ya! The northern lights up here are awe inspiring sight. I've been fortunate too have watched them a different times of the year but enjoy them most during the winter months. THEY ARE INTENSE! Bold blues.purples, greens and faded yellows. Many times during the winter the family and friends sit around the fire out the back of my place and watch them while we have a coffe or hot cider.

Re: The Northern Lights

I saw them last night. Was out with my daughter for the youth season. At first I just noticed some flickering just above the horizon and wondered what it was. Then half the sky turned red and then just above the horizon it turned green and white and staight up there were white spots showing up and fading away. It was quite the site. Especially since we don't see them here in Missouri very often.

Sometime we'll have to have a discourse on quantum physics. That will really blow your mind! smile.gif
