shot a buck this morning

shot a buck this morning around 8am and I think I took out the liver and into the gut. I could see the hole with blood coming out so I decided to back off and go look for him later. I don't want to jump him in his bed. I figure I'd go back around 2pm to pick up the traill. 6 hours should be fine just in case I didn't hit the liver. What do you think?

Re: shot a buck this morning

Well I went and followed the blood trail tonight. I followed it and ran into some quaders and they tore up the trail. I chased them off the property and continued the search. Blood trail was lost in the trail where the quaders tore up the dirt and leaves. Took me another 1/2 hour before I found it again and it took me into a thicket where I lost the blood trail. I went looking for upturned leaves and disturbed ground and jumped the buck not 20ft away. He got up and ran about 30yds and I believe he stopped. At that point I marked the tree with ribbon and got out of there. I must have gut shot him and didn't give him enough time. I'll go out in the morning and try to find a dead body in the general area. He must have traveled 400yds before laying down and got jumped. I shot him at 8 this morning and jumped him at 4pm. What are my odds of finding this buck?

Re: shot a buck this morning

Well I just got back from the morning hunt. Saw about 7 does all morning and then around 9 am went to pick up the trail from last night. Like I said last night I jumped him around 4pm and backed out and took a mental picture where I saw him last. Sure enough he laid not 20 yds from where I saw him stop. He must have died soon after that because he was stiff as a board and he smelled from the gutshot. Seems I hit him further back than I thought. It entered his gut and came out on a down angle. I really felt horribly about not taking the meat. Thats the thing that really affects me. I didn't harvest the animal quickly and I'm to blame. He happened to be a three pointer so I scalped him and dragged his carcass where I know coyotes are sure to find him. I only wish I would have pursued him after I jumped him. I could have taken another shot at him while he layed. But then again I could have jumped him again and not found him at all.
