Guest antlers21
Yep it is my first time. I bought a TC omega and am going to shoot it this week some. I was going to shoot the pellet form powder and was wondering how many grains I should use??? What brand and how much do you think I should use for whitetail hunting. Any help is appreciated. AJ
Re: First time muzzleloading??? What type of pellets do you have? What bullets are you shooting? How far are you planning to shoot? What is your ignition source? I always start at the typical 100 grain load and go up from there.
Guest antlers21
Re: First time muzzleloading??? AJ, I have not bought my pellets yet or my bullets yet. I was hoping to get some insight here first. My longest shot even possible is 120 yards but I dont expect to be shooting past 80-90 yards. Ignition source??? Any help is appreciated. I want to go and by the pellets, bullets and that stuff this week and sight it in on saturday. Thanks.
beagleboy
Re: First time muzzleloading??? The best burning pellets are the Pyrodex. Pyrodex also makes Triple 777 which makes the cleaning of your gun with water. I usually shoot 2 50 grain pellets. As far as bullets, you'll have to decide yourself because every gun will shoot differently. Check the gun manufacturer and see what brand they suggest. Good luck
AJ
Re: First time muzzleloading??? The ignition source is the #11 cap, musket cap, 209 primer, small rifle primer, etc. I hate the 209 primers in a ML. I have had outstanding success with musket caps and currently have good success with the Vari-Flame primer adapter in my Knight and my Encore. They allow the use of small rifle primers which are not as potent as the 209 primer but still ignite the 150 gr charges well. They don't leave near as much crud in the barrel as the 209s do. As for bullets, I have used quite a few different ones in the past. I have used Hornady XTP, Knight 310 gr lead sabots, a couple different weights of Powerbelts, Hornady SST, Precision Rifle QT 40, and Precision Rifle Dead Centers. The QT 40 and the Dead Center are my favorites. They perform very well in many guns, are accurate, and do a great job on deer. I have shot over a dozen deer with them and they give good blood trails and short recoveries. They have never failed me. I would look at the 220 gr Dead Center being pushed by 100 or so grains of Pyrodex or Triple 7. I have used pellets for years but have switched back this year. The cost of pellets is one of the reasons. I can usually get Pyrodex on sale after the season for $5 or so a pound at Wal Mart. I still have 3 pounds of it from the last sale. Guest Thomkm
Re: First time muzzleloading??? I'm using an Omega this year. The load I ended up with was 2 - 50 gr 777 pellets behind a 250 gr TC Shockwave. I have it set up for 100 yds. and is extremely accurate. At the range I spit swap and dry swap between rounds. Good Luck.
