Turkeygirl
Not a good morning as in I don't like missing a deer when I shoot at. I got to the one stand this morning, all set up and waited in 20 degrees, it was cold! About 8am, a spike buck comes in front of me about 25 yards. This late in the season, anything legal is game for my tag as Andy and I are hunting for meat to fill the freezer. Well I put my sights on and release, only to see the arrow go way to low and miss him, so I think. I immediately knew I hadn't aimed high enough to compensate for being higher up the tree in this stand which gives me a steeper angle when shooting. Well at 8:40am, I get down and retrieve my arrow, finding a big clump of white hair and two drops of blood. I knew that if I didn't miss him, I probably grazed his belly. I follow his tracks in the leaves, finding a drop of blood abour every 3-5 yards. After about following this for 100 yards, I wuit because I know he will be fine. He actually didn't even act like he knew what had happened when I shot, just trotted forward and stopped then kep walking on. So I know my mistake, now can anyone tell me how to calm myself when a deer comes in? I get so excited that I forget stuff I need to remember like aiming a little higher when in the one stand. I guess it is just practice and patience, as I sometimes feel like I have to rush the shot when I pull my bow back. I'm glad I didn't wound him badly though and I'll be back out in the morning. Tominator
Re: Not a good morning.... When it ceases to get exciting, I guess that's when we should give up the sport Ruth. Something that calms me down is talking myself out of the shot. When I see a deer that I know I want to shoot, and if I'm getting too excited I verbally tell myself "calm down, he's not even going to give you a shot...." and things like that. It helps. tedicast
Re: Not a good morning.... I agree with Chris. I talk to myself like an idiot before a shot. Telling myself all the comon sense stuff....calm down! pick a spot! How far away is he? stupid stuff like that. for some reason it seems I get the shakes worse when it is cold out. I had a couple deer I thought were gonna come in range this morning, and I was shaking like it was my first deer, and they were 60 yards away...I love this sport!!!! [/ QUOTE ] LOL, that happened to me opening morning. Had a doe and a 9point buck following her. They never got within 30 yards, through some thick stuff. After they went over a hill, I got the shakes like you wouldn't believe, lol.
jbeck
Re: Not a good morning.... I like to concentrate on the proper tech. for the shot. I go through my rutine. Low wrist, pick a spot, wait for the proper angle, squeeze, whatch the reaction of the deer, mark the last place I can see the deer. This seems to help me with the buck fever. NY_Bowhunter14
Re: Not a good morning.... i had that problem too... Not to brag or anything but I have seen so many deer this year that I don't get excited until after the shot. Thats when I start to shake and my mind wanders... Just take a deep breathe, take your time with the shot, wait until he gets vloser if he is heading to you and just let the arrow fly! Tony
Re: Not a good morning.... i have been bowhunting for 29 years . when its not exciting anymore im going to hang it up. last year for my first time ever i had target panic on deer. i could nail any target out to 70 yards. but for some reason last year i was just a mess. i couldnt get my pin down on the deer like in previous years.. and get that good aiming spot. a buddy told me to take the pressure off and to just act like it was 3d and find the 10 ring. it worked for me last year. each person its differant , each of us needs to find that something that makes us really concentrate when the shot is on live game.. for me its find the 10 ring like in 3D . for others they talk to thenselves and boost that confidence so that they can make the shot.. but missing is part of the game. to make a good shot with bow on deer it takes a combination of several things in a split second shot. correct range , proper aiming point, proper shooting form and perfect release . thats why we need to practice as serious as we hunt.. so that when the moment of truth comes its all been done so much its just automatic.. Shawn
Re: Not a good morning.... i do the same thing as tom, if its a doe or spike buck i talk to myself, i say its only a spiker, you've got them before, no big deal....seems to help me a little, but when a big ole boy comes in there aint no way to stop the trembling knees and shaking. good luck to you
VtBowhunter
Re: Not a good morning.... I'm a bit confused.......you were at a steep angle, but failed to aim high enough to compensate for the angle? In all the tourneys and hunting scenarios I've ever been in, everyone I know would have to aim low due to the arrow rising. Are you sure you just grazed him? Seems that if you were still coming across blood then you should have kept going. Just my opinion.
beagleboy
Re: Not a good morning.... I usually try to take a deep breath and think about bills and taxes. That usually ticks me off and keeps the gitters away.
Turkeygirl
Re: Not a good morning.... I'm definitely sure I grazed him, saw the arrow the whole way and the deer reacted like nothing was wrong. By steep angle, I mean this stand I was hunting in is higher up than I'm used to. Andy told me since I'm up a little higher, the arrow is going to drop a little so aim a little higher than in my other stand. Does that make more sense. When I shot, I though the deer was at 25 yards, but I think it was closer to 30. Thanks everyone for the input!
rockefeller66
Re: Not a good morning.... I did the exact same thing this morning, missed a does TWICE, just plain miss judged the distance, both time took off hair, the second time i got about 5 drops of blood and found both arrows with absolutely no sign on them, just clean shot under her BOTH times, just learn with every mistake, it will come!!!!! puffy
Re: Not a good morning.... I've missed my fair share and sometimes never take a shot. I tell myself to "aim small shoot small" to pick the spot and then forget to take in air.LOL It's a mental game we have to deal with because we're bitten by the bug to hunt. Your gonna bag a beauty yet, I'm sure of it!
