Idaho_ Elk_ Huntr
I need some ideas on a custom rifle. I know I want it chambered in one of the following, 300 Win mag, 300 WSM, 300 Rem Ultra or a 338 Rem Ultra. Who would you look to do it. I want a Rem 700 action and I can even supply it. I want it built right! I have a budget of about $5000. I had planned on a Christensen Arms rifle but have had many to tell me to stay away. Any help is appreciated!! Reloader
Re: Custom rifle help Serengeti/Montana Rifles (two companies..they work together to make rifles; one does the actions and one does stocks and assembly) Rifles Inc. (the shop I personaly drool over ) Lazeroni (seems to be a favorite of Craig Bodington) Hill Country Rifles Jarret Rifles Pick up just about any hunting magazine and read the authors description of the gun they are using...about half will be using custom guns from one of these 5 companies. If you want semi custom the list gets even longer... Kimber etc...etc...etc... Hope that helps.
AJ
Re: Custom rifle help There are many good gunsmiths out there that can build a good gun for a lot less than $5K. Spending $5k in a Remington actioned gun is a bit on the high side. They are ok for a production gun, but for custom gun and that amount of cash, I will have a custom gun. You can get into the Dakota line of guns for that much money. I personally like the Nesika rifles. Other good smiths are: Clay Spencer Speedy Gonzales Jim Borden Hammond's I suggest you contact a few different gunsmiths and let them know what your expectations are and if they can do what you want. What kind of accuracy do you expect? How light do you want the gun? What type of stock do you want? What finish do you want on the gun? Have your questions ready ahead of time because good gunsmiths are a usually different type. Time spent talking to you on the phone is time they can't be working on a gun making money. They don't need your business and are backlogged for a year to come. If you use a Rem 700 action, you should have enough left over after building the gun to add a Swarovski or Zeiss scope. You should have a fine gun when its done.
Idaho_ Elk_ Huntr
Re: Custom rifle help I was looking hard at HS Precision rifle before you posted AJ. Now I'm where I was a few weeks ago. I didn't know all these smiths existed. Clay Spencer's shop was 20 miles from my house when I lived in Virginia and never heard anyone mention him and never knew he was there. Looks like a need to chill and do some research. I'm wanting an extremely accurate hunting rifle more than likely chambered in the 300 RUM. Thanks for the help guys

robk
Re: Custom rifle help to behonest ifyo have allthe parts then all you have to do is find a good smith and have him do the work for your rifle to make it meet your tolerances and go for it. it isn't thathard to build a rifle and make it your own. i just got thru with my friends help and a good smith and i have a nice long shooting 243 in mauser action. i had the action from an 8mm turkish masuer, the barrel was a remington barrel and it was cool i used a boyd optima trigger and used a nice laminated stock with a grind on sims recoil pad and i am working on some ammo right now and i am trying 85 grain hollow point boattail bullet to see if it works. i am hoping we get a reloader kit and cvan work up some loads to see which would be the best for me and my rifle. rob k if you want a good smith i got one in oregon
