Guest Phaseolus (BeanMan)
I just shot 30 rounds of 165g Trophy bonded bearclaws through my 3006. I cleaned the heck out of it last night but still can see copper in the grooves near the muzzle. I started with hoppes #9. Next I went to Butch's bore cleaner that is supposed to remove copper. After a session with that I still had lots of copper so I tried the Barnes copper CR-10, still there. I've never shot bullets with a copper base before, I guess that is where the copper is coming from. They grouped well enough for hunting and 4th Elk starts Wednesday so I am committed for this year. Any Suggestions? BeanMan
AJ
Re: Copper fouling removal How much copper was in the bore before you started shooting, can be your problem. Fouling gets deposited in layers. You can have layers of powder fouling on top of copper fouling. When you strip one layer, you uncover another. Some of the good copper removers are Coppermelt, Sweets 7.62, CR-10, and probably some others. Good solvents for carbon (powder fouling) are Hoppes #9, Shooters Choice, Ed's Red, etc. When you use copper remover, be sure to use a nylon jag. If you use it with a brass jag, you are getting false readings. The jag is giving copper readings. I use a steel rod with a nylon jag for copper removal. Once the stuff is gone, I soak with powder solvent, and use a bronze brush. Once more with powder solvent on a patch, and then dry patch till the bore is dry. Again with the copper solvent on nylon patch. Repeat as necessary till clean. See my thread on Rifle Bore Cleaning in the How-To Section. Guest cowpoke
Re: Copper fouling removal Some of the best stuff I have found for removing copper is a foam called Wipeout, it is also very safe to the barrel compared to some of the other hevy duty materials. I put the wipeout in and leave it sit overnight, then clean it out. If it's really heavily fouled I put it in a let is sit for 12 hours or so again. I get it from Midsouth Shooters Supply Once in a while I may need to take the Butches to it to get some carbon out, but that is it.
AJ
Re: Copper fouling removal Actually, all of the copper solvent is safe to barrel steel when used per the directions.

Guest Phaseolus (BeanMan)
Re: Copper fouling removal Thanks to all and especially AJ. My rifle is one ot he ones you described that has had a lot of rounds through it. I had only been using Hoppes no 9 until last weeks cleaning session, thought I was getting it all. With my elk hunt coming up Wednesday morning I don't think I'll give it a full copper regime for fear of changing my POI. After that, I will. thanks again, BeanMan
