.280 question for AJ

AJ,

I'm wanting to buy a .280 to hunt deer. I'm considering getting a 26" barrel for my Encore but have also thought about getting a Remington 700 or Browning A-Bolt. I know the Browning comes with a 22" barrel but I'm not sure if the Remington is 22 or 24". My question is am I better of getting the 26" barrel or is the 22 or 24" better? Does it even matter? Thanks!

Re: .280 question for AJ

Remiington only offers a 22" barreled 700 chambered in 280 Rem for 2005. You can see what they offer by clicking here.

By adding a few inches to the .280 Rem you are making the cartridge come alive. On a 22" barreled gun, the difference between a 7-08 and the 280 Rem is getting close. When the .280 has a 26" barrel it gains a lot and is on the heels of a 7mm Rem Mag.

I prefer long barrels. It's definately a boost in speed, with a small amount of muzzle weight. It makes the recoil seem less also. The overall length will not change that much when comparing a T/C with 26" vs a bolt gun with a 22" or 24" barrel because the action is inches shorter.
