Dead Monster blacktail

I had a great day out hunting today, but I was almost in tears when I found this guy (less than a month old), about 50 yrds in off the powerlines on the private property that I hunt. You wait for years around here to see a buck of this caliber.

I'm only speculating here, but I'll bet he fell to a poachers bullet on the powerlines. I found the carcuss, in his bed in the swamp.

Man, that sure was a good'n. Too bad he didn't make some legal hunter very happy.

Question: Are blacktail deer more related to mule deer or whaitetails? A cross between the two? A totally different species not related to either?

I should probably just look it up.

Yeah that bites...

How big does a blacktail get rack wise? I know they don't get as big as a whitetail. But That blackie looks like it was a 5x5. I think thats a giant in the blacktail world.

I've never seen a blacktail with more than the typical 5x5 frame, except for stickers.

Most of the blacktails here are much smaller. You get a lot, and I mean a lot of genetic 2x2's here. Then they go up from there .

The blacktails seem to get smaller antler-wise and body-wise the further north you go. The blacktails south of Canada (Oregon, California) are huge compared to the ones here.

It always great when you see one like this walking around. I almost cried when I found him. frown.gif
