johnf
After reading aj's post on the 25-06 cartrige, I'm not sure if I want to trade off my NEF 25-06 for the mossberg 270 just yet. I think I can get enough cash from the 25 to pay for the 270, and I was planning on getting another scope anyway. I had the trigger worked by NEF last spring and it's down to about 3lbs. The tech there said he would take it down as low as he thought was save, and it's pretty light but not a hair trigger by any stretch. My main concern for the 25-06 is that shells are hard to get here. About the only thing Wal-Mart carries is a 100 gr. Corlock. I got some 120 grain corlock at Sportsman's guide and used those last year. My scope was loose and I didn't realize it untill I had already missed two nice bucks. That and the 7lb factory trigger made me re-think the wheather or not I wanted the gun. So what's the verdict, get a gun that I haven't fired and not get to hunt with it, or stick with the 25-06 and get it sighted in good this week for the late season? johnf
Re: 25-06 or 270 I'm 5'6" and 170lbs. I aint gettin no 7mm Mag or 300 win. I've already got arthritis in my shoulder, what are you trying to do, kill me? I don't feel comfortable getting a gunsmith to sight a gun in. I would rather know for myself how it is shooting. If I got a new gun this late in the season, I would just put it up for next year and get out my 243 or shotgun.
LifeNRA
Re: 25-06 or 270 For deer? I would use the 270! I own a 270 and its the perfect deer rifle! But then, if I were to buy that deer rifle again the same way, I would get a .30-06! That way you can hunt everything form varmits to the biggest game! Also a ton of bullet options you can use! The only reason I bought a 270 was it was going to be only a deer rifle, and I didnt hunt bear! But with the advancements in ammo I might use it for bear this year! JimT
Re: 25-06 or 270 I would opt for the .270 also.I have one and like it alot. So much that I moth balled my 30/06 until my kids get old enough to hunt. Nothing wrong with a 25/06 either though, as far as deer are concerned. AJ
Re: 25-06 or 270 If it were me, I don't really care for starting off with a new gun just before season. I want something I know intimately. I don't have to look at the gun to load, unload, place on safe, off safe, etc. I know its fun to get a new gun and take that hunting, but I like to do that mid summer when I can test, tweak, and wring out the accuracy and performance I want. I would get some more ammo and see what it will do. It will kill any deer just as dead as the .270, 30-06, or 7mm Mag will.
robk
Re: 25-06 or 270 i'm with aj if you know the 06 then why try and det another gun up and hope you can shoot it okay and miss your early gun season. if your dead set on shooting the 270 then make it after this gun season and enjoy rob k
iron buck
Re: 25-06 or 270 I like the 25-06. It will do everything you are after. But if your heart is set on a 270..............why not keep the 25-06 & just get the 270? It is more fun that way LOL!
johnf
Re: 25-06 or 270 I'ts all a Moot point now. Deer season starts Saturday morning. I went to get my 25 bore sighted last night, we figured out there was a major problem with my scope. With the scope setting exactly straight up and down and changing the elivation, it would move up and to the right or down and to the left. Changing the windage left made it go left and up, right made it go down and right. Then I would tap the scope and it might jump 4 or 5 inches in any direction. Maybe I'll get a new scope for Christmas. That could also explain why I missed to bucks with it last year. To make a long story short. I'll be shooting my 243 this year. wtnhunt
Re: 25-06 or 270 Been really happy with my .270. Would not hesitate to get another one for a deer gun, but thinking my next rifle will be a 30-06.
