Smitteken
I don't know I'm completely baffled with the deer on our property. Last monday I saw two nice bucks one was chasing a doe back and forth across the field. then wednesday I saw three bucks none of which acted interested in estrous or any calls. But the scrapes are dried up as well. I haven't hunted since saturday but I'm still stooped. I would imagine though that bucks will be shacked up with there does by the weekend. hoyt19
Re: Wset Central IL gun season In Northwest IL we are having the same problem- scrapes will be very active for a few days and the game cameras will be full of pictures, then all at once nothing. One day bucks are chasing does, the next the are feeding together in the same field and nothing is going on. Your guess is as good as mine. Good luck on Friday everyone. KirkV
Re: Wset Central IL gun season Hmmmmmmm they keep walking 10 feet from my stand lol. But seriously I think bucks are hanging with the does they mate with for 2-3 days and then head back out to find another receptive doe. Both my bucks were just cruisin lookin for does but not chasin them! Good luck everyone and I will be looking for a fat doe for meat. Guest ILclimber
Re: Wset Central IL gun season I hunt in S. Central IL and I have seen some pretty good activity last weekend. Had a small 7pt and a forkie in close chasin and the 7 was pushing the smaller buck out of the way like he was saying I don't think so junior. I imagine it's getting ready to kick off right now and into the weekend with the cooler weather!
ilhnter
Re: Wset Central IL gun season I'm like almost everyone else. I hunt in Southern Illinois and it's really weird down here. Some scrapes but the deer just aren't checking them very often at all. Seems to be about every 4 to 5 days. Also i haven't seen many good bucks chasing does. All i've seen is little bucks running does and running them hard. My buddy hunts in cental Illinois and he said the same thing, that it is all little bucks doing the chasing. Who knows, at least with gun season you have hunting pressure running deer everywhere. Can't wait. Good luck this weekend everyone and be safe. Tominator
Re: Wset Central IL gun season OK, I'm in Ohio, and I haven't hunted much lately because I tagged my buck back on the 3rd, but I'm home with a sick son, and I'm bored, so here's my observations from this Buckeye (which is a worthless nut) The rut around here has been weird as well. The first week of November I saw a lot of bucks, all out cruising looking, and I have yet to see a buck locked up on a doe. I have not seen any chasing yet this year. I have 2 or 3 buddies that have updated me regularly, and they are saying essentially the same thing. Some days they'll see 20 deer, then only one or two, and not much chasing. Weird. I think a lot of it has to do with the weather. It was 70 degrees when I shot my buck on the 3rd, and it has been unseasonably warm since then, until last night when we finally got a good cold front. My advice--get out and hunt. lol.
MUDRUNNER
Re: Wset Central IL gun season The only bucks I've seen chasing does have been little 1 1/2 olds.I've seen a few big bucks, but they would just walk the trails and maybee tend a licking branch.Scrapes are dried up,which tells me the bucks are probably with does, but the rut seems pretty weak so far.The weather has been terrible-too warm and too windy.I have not had a single buck respond to grunts, bleats,or rattling all year, which is very unusual.Looks like the weather is changing just in time for shotgun season,so hopefully they'll be on the move. TOMSD5
Re: Wset Central IL gun season im in north tn and the same thing is happening here also but i think the cold temps and staying that way will open the rut up... now maybe the big boys will come out to play...saturday is our opener of rifle season....we'll see...god luck to all...
