i need feedback fast!!!???we have a 1acre briar patch behind the old run down barn we park at, it is very thick, with scattered saplings in it,& there is NO WAY you could get into it...it is surrounded by a few hundred acre field on three sides, the forth side is where we park....i took notice that there is an old weed covered path(about 10yards wide) that seems to cut right through the center... the best part is there are some "HUGE" deer tracks & some smaller ones leading into & out of this patch, & nobody has noticed this??!! im thinking of setting up a ground blind on the edge so i can see down that path......has anyone ever tried this?? is it worth it?? do you think us parking & hanging out there all afternoon will bother them???or maybe they are there after dark??? this really is'nt my style but i think i know what might be in there??!! i have read about hunting these little patches, but i don't know of anyone first hand doing this.........thanks...

Re: briar patches....

you can almost bet your booties that this briar patch is the deers bedding area.

Ift sounds like an awesome spot really. You just have to be very careful setting up near there as not to spook the deer that are bedded there. You need to make a few different set-ups to be able to hunt whichever wind is blowing on any given day.

Are you bow-hunting this spot??

Scout it quietly but well, and find out where the deer are exiting and entering.

Remember the direction of the winds while making your blinds.

I just wish I was there to give you a hand smile.gif

Good luck

yeah that would work,go for it, another idea would be.....To run dogs through it(while you and some of your buds surround it) or just do a man drive... if it is legal in your state

[/ QUOTE ].....i have found the spot i want to set up at...i would acually be at the edge of it, in a log pile next to the field looking down that path, i do not want to enter it at all..... but i have to wait till the wind is right to set up there. i really can't set up anywhere else because you can't see into it....man i will feel like a moron sitting there looking into a patch of briars!!!!!!....you don't think us parking there will spook them???? thats my biggest fear

I wouldn't want to enter it either. not this time of the year. Waiting for the right wind is your only wise move.

I disagree with driving it or pushing dogs through it. That could ruin your chances of being selective in your search to see whoall's living there.

I guess we're all morons then. Heck I can sit in a ground-blind or a tree-stand and watch an empty field, tree-line or deer trail for hours upon end. grin.gif Join the successful deer hunter moron club..LOL

As far as parking goes, I would be sure to do your best at parking somewhere where you can get into your spot, without getting winded by any deer in the briars. Vehicals don't spook deer near as much as the smell of a human, once you've exited your vehical.

It sounds like a great spot. I'm excited for you.

Be patient ..eh wink.gif

Have to agree with what Steve says here.

Sounds like a pretty good plan to me.

Sounds exactly like my situation. The deer pictured above has been hanging out in or around my field for at least 1 year, and deer in general will hang out back there because of 2 things I think, cover/security and food.

I promise you, big bucks will find little patches of property and hang out because they're rarely disturbed out there. Most people don't hunt open fields because it's just too difficult. I've stalked to within 70 yards of a nice deer last year, and 40 yards 2 years before that on a deer that would go 140" or so.

So far, the only way I've found to hunt those little patches effectively is to drive them, but stalking is fun too, but you have to get close with archery.

Now if I were a gun hunter, I've had shots on numerous deer, big deer, that lay right out in my field, not even 200 yards off my back deck. crazy.gifgrin.gif

I'd suggest spotting and stalking (which sounds nearly impossible in your situation), or driving it.

I have found that the deer that lay in my field wil only move in the daylight if they are pushed out.

don't worry about feeling like a moron. I killed my biggest deer in a hayfield, about 100 yards from the road. I was belly crawling towards the deer to get a shot when my brother drove down the road. He said he thought I was crazey till I called him and told him what I killed. I bellycrawled to within 60 or 70 yards of this one.

lawrence_03.jpg

I wasn't concerned the least about how I looked.

I would not park near the area the day I wanted to hunt though. Also they might be bedding in there in the day, and coming out to the fields at dark. Have you got a tripod stand you can set up on the edge of the thicket?

[/ QUOTE ]

Great example, and I can relate. It took me about an hour on 2 occasions to clean my bow after belly crawling like that. One time I belly crawled for 2 hours trying to get close enough for a bow shot.

Fun!

Re: briar patches....

i know how you feel, there are most likely tons of deer in there like the below story.

we have a thicket in the woods i hunt and it is full of small trees and briars. and we call it the deer hiding hole.

it's so thick that it's hard to hunt but i was walking through last year while squirrel hunting and i saw the biggest buck i have even seen out here. probley a 150 class at least and he was the biggest bodied deer i have seen too ! that plus there are deer all over that thicket ! tracks, rubs, scrapes, and trails everywhere !

they dont come out of there in the daylight so next year i'm going to set my treestand in there and hopefully get a few deer out of it.
